This day the 15th of November 2019 ..ice was forming on my local ponds edge ..same year December 20th had travelable ice on that same pond . This year had a coating of snow today ...we may get ice to fish on by Christmas ..but the first week in January is usually the kick off.

My early ice spots usually have ice by the end of November which I am hoping for but I'll play it safe and predict ice by the first or second weekend on December.

Average daily temp has dropped about 20* since late October and there is really no big swings in the 10 day forecast  I'm hoping it keeps going down   Just visited lakeside outfitters this AM and came home with some shinny new jigs as well as a Loomis jigging  rod   Nice little piece of equipment  and good folks to deal with  Had quite a snow squall in that area this morning

Safe ice? Never heard of it. The first time I feel wil be a comfortable fishing trip. Dec15-20.

Usually between Christmas and New Years is a safe bet, but crazy weather this year could make it go either way.  That crazy snow storm last December came out of nowhere and dumped almost three feet of snow on us only to melt shortly thereafter.  Welcome to the northeast.

The same spots get burned every year on FB but that's all good because most of the less known spots barely get attention.

Checked out a slew of lakes today. Brant, Eagle, Paradox, Eaton, Durant, and Adirondack. Brant isn’t walkable yet. Small end of Eagle is good. Paradox you can get on but I didn’t venture far due to sketchiness of ice. Looked thin and before that I went through too easily with my bar. Fished Eaton with my jig rod for 20 mins or so. My real purpose of the day was just to scout. Durant and Adirondack are fishable. It varied with ice thickness in each lake but was consistent 3.5 to 4 inches plus. Durant definitely has more than all at least where I checked but I only bust through with my bar  which took about 10 good solid hits. Be careful out there only Durant and Adirondack have snow cover

Finally scratched that itch today. It felt wonderfully intoxicating to get on ice although I found out how frustrating it is going to be to put back a slew of 9 1/2" crappie. My 8 fish that would have made a swell dinner for two was reduced to 4 fish when I had to adhere to that stupid 10" rule. The weather was great and I left a couple chubs on the ice for the eagle.
           I love this life

Last year was REALLY early on the lake I fish and it lasted all winter but it was kind of freaky ....its a relatively small lake and it was so windy. that while we were fishing on 6-8" of rock solid ice in Dec, the middle of the lake a couple hundred yards away didn't freeze until February ....we would be fishing and watching open water within sight.....

Man!! Tough brake on the extended forecast. I predict I will be running out of perch/walleye fillets before I get on any ice in my neck of the woods anyway. I didn’t even buy any new ice gear this season either… I promise. No worries I have a plan. This weekend I’ll re-line a couple of my open water rigs and buy the most expensive insulated chest waiters I can find. That should be good for some skim ice at least 🤣

thing

I was thinking the same thing this morning - really want the cold - but don't want the 2 ft of snow that we would get this weekend if it were cold....plus if we just had a couple inches of ice it would "never" freeze with that much snow on it ....
Title: Re: Predictions

X3. Hit up a couple of my “early ice” spots to take a look after work yesterday and surprisingly found almost an 1” of ice. A foot of snow would have made more of a mess than just another restart. I’m starting to feel a little more optimistic though with the extended forecast after Monday. It might be a while before we get on the big stuff but I’m really feeling optimistic about getting on some smaller lakes and bays before new years. Gonna sneak in a bit more hunting the next weekend or 2 and keep 🤞 for some cold temps

OK all bets are off. I'm just hoping we have A season at all. I checked a small southern Adk pond this morning which is usually my go to for early ice. I found barely 2" with 4" of snow and 1" of slush on top. 2 hits with a spud and it went thru. Went back to the coffee shop while I was still dry.

            This stinks

Heading out Sunday, getting my bait tomorrow- a buddy checked the lake we fish last night and it had 3" of hard ice - should be almost twice as thick by Sunday....my bait guy said he has a lot of people picking up bait tomorrow too....

Hah! I said the same thing Wednesday.  Ice is 3in by sunday it will be double. I went out today and 3.5 inches but past 20 yards its 2inches and spud goes right through. Warm weather coming next week. This isnt just a repeat of last year.. it looks to be worse. I didnt want to believe global warming is real. I still dont want to believe it, but the reality is getting hard to ignore. If you ice fish in NY you know everything should be frozen by now and it just isnt that way anymore. Ice fishing might just be coming to an end in NY, at least I dont think it will ever go back to the old normal.

Last year I was on the ice in Mid December (my earliest ever on the lake I fish in my memory) in CNY and my last trip was the end of March ......now the ice forms a couple weeks later and ice fishing is coming to an end in CNY ?  LOL  The ice on the lake I fish gained another inch by Thursday night.....ice formation depends on the wind and snow cover as much as the cold.....the "warm weather" next week will only add to the ice on lakes where its decent now

Melts the snow and/or runs off on the ice - sits on top of the ice and freezes into more ice .....do you have any idea how long it would take a few hours of 40 degree weather each day to melt an inch of ice ??  By the time it starts melting the freezing temps at night will be back making more ice.....The "warm air and rain" (I'm see a showers in the forecast) won't even melt the few inches of snow we have have never mind an inch of ice ..... as a matter of fact the little bit of "rain" will probably get soaked up by the dry snow we have on the ground .....I've been ice fishing for 60 years - but you don't have to believe me - thats fine ....

Well I guess if warm air and rains makes ice, we shoulda been ice fishing in July. Lol. I dont understand how spring makes ice disappear. Does cold and dry make ice melt? .. c'mon. You can deny reality, but the fact is rain and warm melts ice. It doesnt make it. I dont need Bill Nye the science guy to tell me that. Even if the water sits on the ice and melts the snow, you will still need cold to re freeze it. And there will be less ice. I will revisit in a week and see if there is more ice next weekend or less. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say less.

Lmao. Funny how our government starts in with this global warming fear mongering stuff the last 3 years and we get a couple less than desirable icefishing seasons and all the sudden it’s the end of icefishing. I do know one thing for sure this weekend is better than last weekend and I believe next weekend will be better than last weekend as well. There is plenty of fishable ice around if you do some homework and looking. Elevation also plays a big role in what will be frozen and what won’t. I will not be sitting around complaining. Had a killer morning today and will be back at it again tomorrow while it’s around. Good luck all

I hope your right and global warming is a total fraud. That would be best case scenario. Owasco lake where I live used to freeze the entire lake every year and had the best laker jigging around. Now you cant even barely ever perch fish at the south end through the ice. It's a very rare occurrence. Seems like a long string of bad ice fishing years now. I havent fished through the ice for lakers on owasco in at least 7 years maybe more.

Same principle as ice skating rinks ....they spread water on the ice as they scrape it, freezes in 20 minutes before the teams come back out ....the water spreads on the the surface of the lake ice and it freezes it.....the rinks are at least in the 50's temp wise too - whether there will be more or less ice will depend on a lot of factors - how long the temps will be in the 40's - if there is sun - the body of water being affected....how much ice is on the lake etc ....you sound like you haven't ice fished very long...I'm very familiar with the lake I fish - I know how it reacts to all conditions .....

You can't judge "global warming" (which even the climate wackos refuse to call it any more - now its climate change - LOL) looking at weather over the last 7 years or 10 years or 50 years or 100 years .....there have been long warm periods and cold periods and average periods in the earths history and there will be more of each going forward .....all climate change is is a money making joke for rich people

Don't know what's going on with the weather other than what's on the 6oclock news. Don't care to argue or gripe about it. I do know that the last few days/ nites have been good for making hard water. Surprisingly not all of live in the North Country and not everyone lives allow driving to chase ice. And I may not have fished as many years as Cards but I'm fairly confident that 3 days/nights over freezing with rain and temps pushing 50 is not going to grow any ice around me

I was on 4” of black ice yesterday, just have to do some scouting so you know what bodies of water freeze first and the tell tale hints that let you know when it should be good to go.  When I see the Inner Harbor frozen over on my way to work I know it’s time to check my spot with ice gear in hand.  When a cap forms over all of Onondaga lake, Oneida is likely safe for machines. Trapper, I used to ice fish Owasco quite a bit back in the day and pulling up 10#+ lakers on tip-up’s in 80’ of water was a blast.  The perch were also easy to find and also plump.  I still hope for a deep freeze one winter to get on that again.

Wed forecast where I fish in CNY is a high of 41 - low of 37 - no where near 50.....Thurday is 45 and a low 43 .....still closer to 40 than 50 .....Fri is a high of 48 and low of 35 -  - thats not 3 days/nights (72 hours) of temps pushing 50.....that won't even melt the snow thats on the ground (which will soak up most if not all of the rain). I was fishing 5-6" of rock solid ice over (35 ft of water) today (as I predicted a couple days ago).  If the rain and snow melt comes to fruition the water sitting on the ice will freeze next weekend and there will be more ice next weekend than this weekend (where I fish).  Believe what you want  - i'll be fishing - and I'll be safe - LOL

Well. It's been a week.. a warm week. At least where I live, the ice has taken a serious hit and any ice that was remotely flshable is now completely unfishable. The small pond in my back yard has even mostly melted.. and it's not done yet. It's not going to get below freezing until at least tomorrow night. The worst part is, there does not look to be another cold snap in sight (unless you count the sam Adam's in my fridge lol). Maybe if you go north to massena or ADK area, you might find good ice. Or a small pond. The runoff has flooded part of the town I live in and just devastated the ice on the smaller lakes. I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. There are probably about 4 weeks left to make ice. Once march comes around the chances of making new ice goes down tremendously. I will be fishing tomorrow, but it will be from the shores of cayuga lake. If anyone else on here can say that they have better/more ice now than last weekend, I would be amazed.

Ice thickness hasn't changed much by me - I had about 1/3 of an inch of ice on the side of my house where it ran off and froze before the last rain and thaw - some of the 1/3 of an inch is still there today....our lake level came up though so its a pretty big step from shore .....will let that go down for a couple days before I head back out......did really good on Tuesday (for me). Got an 18+" walleye and 14 perch - 9 of the 14 were better than 12" and a couple were better than 13" .....

Way to keep at it you guys. In the typical winters in NY of this decade, it takes some effort to check ice to be able to fish. Some guys are looking for 100% guarantees that there will be safe ice where they intend to fish. Have a plan A , a plan B and a plan C before you leave the house. If you sit around depending on reports on this forum, you might never go ice fishing again.
