Ice Fishing High Elevation Brookies
« on: Nov 22, 2020, 11:39 PM »
We went on a 5 mile roundtrip hike to a new lake for some alpine brookies and lakers. Started out as a beautiful day and turned into a blizzard. Saw the biggest moose of my life and caught many stunning Brook Trout. Here is the video of the trip.

Along with a few photos of the fish.

Use to ice fish Colorado high country heavy the last several year before I moved. Love Colorado lakes and the landscape but relocated due to all the influx and Carla you chaos that place is these days. Colorado has some of the most amazing lakes and landscapes but over the last decade and the massive influx of people, I saw the good lakes over fished and it just broke my heart.

Great video and thank you for supporting catch and release!

Thank you for watching glad you enjoyed it. I know exactly what you mean. I can't believe I'm saying this but i've seen improvement in the size of the fish coming out of these lakes as comparing to 2 years back.  I'm not sure why, but glad to see it. I hope you're enjoying your new home out there in different ways.

Here in the Central Mountains of Colorado the elevation you're fishing is close to 11,000 feet, the ice was 9 inches thick, BUT i also will not go until second week of November. The earliest I've EVER ice fished was Oct. 24th last year at 10,800 feet and it was 5 inches but i had 3 friends and a lot of rope and all.  I LOVE leaving in part of colorado where everything is 2 to 3 hours away even some of the western slope. Probably a 3.2 hours away but still not bad. :)

yah last year i got out early too, we had that arctic blast , and in my area we got down to -20  lol.

This year is more normal, with the past 3 years have decent ice the weekend before thanksgiving (just like what you're saying ) at 10,500 feet.

last year i was fishing an ice shelf with open water next to it at about 5-6 inches.

this year I'm over a foot of ice on thanksgiving!

my big lake is even capped over 2 weeks early, and i'll probably risk it for the biscuit and go out Saturday! maybe NOT break though lol
