Hows the ice on the north? Thinking about going smelt fishing tonight.

5" to 8" as of sat. nite. The shore line was busted up pretty bad right in front of the launch from quads coming off the ice. Careful, there are holes, some as big as cars, covered with only a skim of ice, leftover from permanent shanty locations that were left through the warmup and pulled off after that. They were obvious to see before the snow but now might be a different story.

Take your spud or follow another trail. The largest hole that I seen was in 50 ft of water. Should be marked with pine clippings.
I'm not as good as I once was but I am good once as I ever was.

Those are not holes that the permanants left...the shanty would have fell through...lol...could be little honey combed...but in general just black ice...

Well, just remember looking at 2x4's with cut pieces of rope tied to them that looked quite like shanty anchors around the holes. Didn't say they fell through but last week pulled my permanent shanty off and after  50 degree temps and strong winds the 6ft x 22in. hole cut for the shanty started opening up. Went out two days later and the existing hole was then ten feet x about 3 feet. warm water on the surface + high winds + existing hole = big hole.

There were 5 major holes off the north lauch over the weekend. All big enough to eat a quad. As for man size to many to count.
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

I'm on the south end now. At least 8 good inches. No "shanty holes" to speak of. Great walking conditions. Only getting better.

New to this site, but have read your posts before. was wondering how you did on the south end on the 22nd . Havent been there in a couple weeks. Went up and tried Crystal lake in Beulah instead. Thinking of heading to Gull thursday, just can't decide on north or south end.
