"R" value of snow

Has anyone figured out the "R" value of a inch of snow on the ice as a insulation factor??

Interesting question. Here's what I found after poking around the web for about 5 min:

1 )One inch of snow has an R-value of 1.

2) Ten inches of fresh snow with a density of 0.07 inches, seven percent water, is
approximately equal to a six-inch-layer of fiberglass insulation with an
insulation R-value of R-18.

In conclusion, The more snow on the thin Ice we have on a cold night like tonight means the less ice that is made.
Always factor in snow depth on new ice. A lake with 2"s of snow and 4"s of ice holds tragedy in the drifts and piles. They can hold less than an inch of ice under them. This is the caution fisherman need to use.
