Slushfest 2019
« on: Jan 12, 2019, 07:45 PM »
Got a few more piglets today. 5-6" of slush when we left at 430pm. Feet were soaked on like the second step onto the ice. :P  Stuck it out we got 6 perch between 5 people.  Ice became unstable around 430 pm. ;)

This one went 13.000" and 1.35 lbs.

Slushfest 2019:

More slush:

Widow Maker:

Wet legs:

Nice job...I hate that stuff.  Only thing that might be worse is ice then slush then another crusty ice layer on top of it all. Ugh.  That's a nice Perch though!

Add some vodka and another lighted  widow maker hole about 20 yards you could pretend your in Norway.

I'm not so sure of that,

Glad we didn't make any widows on this day!. Fishing was SLOW to say the least, only 6 perch all day, with a few slimers thrown in. Feet were soaked all day, but weather was warm, so not too bad. Was absolutely one of the weirdest/scariest things to ever happen to me. One second I'm standing there jigging up a perch, the next I'm like what the hell? & the bottom falls out right from under me  :o  As I was falling I tossed my rod and caught myself on the edges of the ice. Stu grabbed my sled & I popped right out. Pretty lucky considering we were in 36ft of water & the ice didn't break around me as I got out, and it was warm. We were fishing there all day. Never saw 3 guys pack up and get the hell out of dodge so quickly!

Glad that you are ok, I saw your group yesterday.  You were on my right.  Feet were soaking wet and miserable so I gave up after 2 hours, no perch just a couple of stockers.  My friend stay a little longer and got 4 perch.

Dang.  Glad you are okay Johnny.  Did the "howdee" crowd circle you with new holes while you were horsing that perch in?  Could have weakened the ice.  :)  Seriously, glad you are telling the tale...been there myself.

Johnny, glad you made it out okay. There's something to be said about ice fishing with others for safety.

Yep, All is good. Like I said, we were all fishing in that area. I think I was using Dropshots holes. Where I was standing, it was getting warmer since there was about 4inches of water there & no slush. In fact, I shoveled some slush there to make somewhat of an island, so my feet were sort-of out of the water. 3ft diameter hole just opened up. Glad the ice I pulled up on didn't keep breaking, that was my fear. Like Slayer said, it really was a pretty fun day till then  ;)

The snow melt warm water runoff is never good for the ice. I think I will go to Papadeaux for the redfish instead of risking it on front range ice. Glad no one made the local news. Hopefully everyone risking it is bringing a rescue rope and spikes.

Yikes definitely not worth it.  I once went thru the  ice on the flattops after snow machining about 6 miles from my vehicle, thankfully it was only waist  deep .  Haven’t been back to the lake ice fishing since, the brookies where huge, but the small lake has several springs.

Thanks for posting your unfortunate experience. My son goes to Penn State and many years we have bad ice covered by snow and slush. I'm marking your photo to show his friends how dangerous ice fishing can be.
