Auger Freeze-up
« on: Aug 16, 2002, 03:07 AM »
Drilling alot of holes in sub-zero weather can be a prob
with a 10" auger in deep snow. The blades form ice and you can't drill, I tried some PAM cooking spray on the end. I could drill 20 holes without a problem.

i have been told that wd -40 works as well .you can use on the ends of your fish rods too.i use the normark rod and spray it before each outing . - don`t overdue it and try not to get on the line .

I have the Ultra mag 3 blade and use Rem-Drilube. This is a teflon coat that goes on dry. Last along time and doesnt come off easy. I tried the PAM and wd40 and wax but doesnt last as long as the teflon. Also silicon spray like STP works for a long time as well. I like the teflon coating better.

I would be careful with WD40.  Tends to stain the water like gas or oil and when you drop your line in...
If you believe in that kind of stuff!
I'm a believer of clean hands too when messin' with equipment.

WD-40 will not only keep ice from sticking to your auger, it is also a great fish attractant. I have seen many fisherman dip there lures in liquid WD-40 available at Home Depot.

The Dri-lube sounds like the way to go.  But a buddy of mine taught me to spray WD-40 on the blades AFTER a days worth of fishing to displace the water.  Keeps the blades sharp for YEARS.  I've got a blue, Mora auger with blades that are seven years old, that have never been sharpened. ;D
I've also used WD-40 as an attractant.  It doesn't always work, but sometimes it's just the ticket.

Instead of using car wax try using hard ski wax.I wax my auger at the beginning of the year and it usally will last all season.I also use ski wax on my snow machine ski's as well as the bottom of my portable shack and also my snow blower shute.Never had a problem with slush buildup and then freezing.
