I hear this a lot on the darkhouse forum. When the pike start spawning does this amp up, sightings, movement, or cruising, that the pike normally wouldn't be doing? I keep hearing guys say " the best part of the season is coming", and wonder if someone would define that time , and why. It seems almost like the rut, and bow season

My favourite time up here is March for big pike. They start staging for the spawn and at times they feed heavily to gain strength for the upcoming spawn which is triggered by water temperature, but the spawn up here usually occurs shortly after ice out. The actual spawn itself takes a lot out of the fish so they start putting on the feed bag to get through it.
In my experience the pike begin to concentrate in certain areas of the lake, stacking up in areas adjacent to their spawning grounds. Concentrate on areas close to spawning grounds and you will find the big pike in March. It's an exciting time of year for sure!

X's 2 for March. That's when the biggest fish of the year are usually caught.
