Nice pike this morning
« on: Mar 20, 2021, 09:59 AM »

We set up at 3AM for a pike walleye combo.  No eyes but Hawkeye did catch this 16.5# 37" fatty.

When we got to the flag there wasn't much of the 100yds still on the spool.  When I saw which flag was up I was optimistic because that was the one with a dead 9" golden on it.  No bait trip there!

It took 18 min. To get her in.  Some times she would pull like a big log, some times she would fight and shake and some times she would reverse direction and sprint towards the hole.

The shaking and sprinting towards the hole were probably due to another one grabbing ahold of her just in front of her tail.  You can see the marks and blood in this picture.

We made sure she was rested and ready to swim before we sent her back down with that big load of eggs.

Great job Nosaj!  Hawkeye will remember that one for a life time.  You should send that pic and a description of the adventure to the Hawkeye Newspaper.  I'm sure they would publish the story.  Great job teaching the younger generation what being a sportsmen is all about!

I was thinking about that.

This was Hawkeye's first pike, Meatandmetal gave him the name.

that young man is well on his way... better to be a master fisherman IMHO than a dragon master on some vidieo game... good job both of you, the master and the student!

As I read your post talking about being a master fisherman I thought your next comment was going to be about his ability to master putting a shiner on a hook ;D.     We have taken a bunch of his 12-14 yr old  buddies ice fishing for their first times and after we show them how to sound the hole and set the depth and rig the bait and have them show me that they know what they are doing I always say with a straight face " Great, you did a really good job set up that tip up and rigging that bait, your a real **censored**"  at this point they kind of  think  that I am completely serious and you can see them trying to hide there grin and not bust out laughing kind of like the "Biggus Dickus" scene in Montey Python's Life of Brian.  Then I say something like what's so funny and walk off in the opposite direction grinning to myself and then Holden starts busting on them.   ;D

Little do they know that these lessons on how to pay attention to detail will effect every aspect of their lives, subtle things that are noticed by some, and missed or ignored by others can  be the difference between success  or failure,  in fishing and in life..

Nosaj, you're doing great work with that boy. He introduced himself like a man on $&#$@@$ pond when I saw you guys last.

No visits from the towns finest this trip?

Once he gets introduced to greenbacks a couple miles south of that spot he's gonna tempt you to set tackle there!

I could just text you, but shanty needs a little shot in the arm! Let's keep them guessing!

That’s the way to do it.

Haven’t seen Goldens in a long time, do you trap your own?

Best part of pike fishing was no disappointment in having some floaters. Dad used to use his cleats to make gourmet pike dead-bait.

Good times

the finest left us alone.  The morning they visited we had been there since 7AM the morning before, so it was probably a justified visit.  I am glad that he announced who he was as I reached under my pillow for comfort.  This time we were more efficient and just fished from3AM-1PM

Sounds good, when are we going? Oh and by the way, Holden and I will not be any part of one of your topless affairs!

We did not catch these.

When they die I salt them and put them in the freezer for future endeavors.
