What do you like to use for lake trout baits?

Venom, I never recall seeing a beetle jig, until I looked at your post. Over here in PA., besides Lake Erie, I don't think you would have many practical places for them.

I'm not familiar with your neck of the woods but in MI there are a few places that are consistant for deep water lakers where they work:  Keweenaw Bay (Upper Peninsula), Munising Bay (Upper Peninsula), Crystal Lake (NW Lower Peninsula), Torch Lake (when it freezes, again in NW Lower Peninsula) and Higgins Lake (Northern Central Lower Peninsula).  There are probably a few others but these are the more popular haunts for this type of fishing and gear.

smelts on a tip up are hard to beat. later in the season when they get fussy i go to to a smaller pinose smelt. suckers work ok too but ive had better luck w/ the smelt.

White tube jigs, white airplane jigs or 3 1/4" Williams ice jigging spoons. The half & half nu-wrinkle finish has been hot. If fishing is slow add a minnow head with guts hanging out to all of the above.

Northland baits has a new product out call Slurpies Jiggin tubes. They work dang good. The lakers always slam it when I use them.
