Laker Lures
« on: Jan 23, 2007, 06:40 PM »
I've got an idea of what some guys like to use, and I've got a few in my bag 'o' tricks but I'm always trying to pick up a few more ideas....
If you had to pick ONE lure/jig for lakers what would it be. Keeping in mind I'm not allowed to tip my lures with baitfish in BC. So the Swedish Pimple tipped with smelt or sucker is out. Have at it......

Its easy to pick just one here,  I would pick a white tube jig, a big one.

im still waiting for the lake to freeze over good. There is only a handful of lakes in our whole state with them. Ive never caught on open water or through the ice, ive made it one of my goals to get one... if the ice produces good... its a big lake

We've got enough lakes, we just cant get to them because of the snow! The lake I'm heading to takes a 1km hike through 4 ft of snow, I figure thats a piece of cake considering most of the other laker lakes are at least a 20min snowmobile ride.

PG, try one of Cabela's special pearl or silver/white 1 oz. bucktail jigs...even without the bait, they seem to get those lakers' attention.

Yep, you can't go wrong with bucktails either, that would be a close second choice for me.

Pikemaster what size of jigs are you using now? For me, Less than 1oz is kind of pointless as I can't feel the weight on my rod. If you're going for smaller (hehehe sorry) lakers in that size range 1oz would be about the biggest you would want to go?

Gotta love the cryptic flatlanders :-\ Grump I have no idea what you're talking about. The backdoor 'you should know what I'm talking about' thing is kinda cute but just come out and say what you're trying to say.

Ya....which is why I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't know of any tackle companies located in Campbell River. I'm from the north. We try to ignore the south as much as they ignore us.

Kyle, a 30" laker is huge in NY. A 30" laker here is an average.

Well, I'm just looking at past IS tourney results....as far as I'm concerned, bigredonice is one of the top for your NY group and I think the biggest he posted was a 33" laker.....

Bet I've caught more lakers over 30 inches in NY than you have in BC. ;D
Many on 3/8 oz. jigs, no less.  You don't always need a heavy jig.

::) ::) OK we got your point.....NY has bigger lakers than BC :roflmao:

Picked up a white tube jig just for kicks.....I can't seem to find any decent bucktails in PG anymore so I might have to tie up a couple of my own.

Gee things are really BUZZ ing in here....
I have tried white tube jigs but don't have as good luck as some have on other places on here.
Holmes and I would get along just fine jigging for lakers, I'd bring the squid though ;)2 Quick someone make that 8 inch hole bigger, he ain't gonna fit ;)2 The trick to them though is having an experienced pilot to fly the airplane.
