« on: Jan 24, 2006, 11:13 AM »
do you think they are or  some places are more leader shy ?  what do you use for lake trout on tip-ups. and what kind of results do you get ... more hits , amount of hook-up's to iceing them?

I usually use a 5' leader of supermono, if I am fishing smaller waters I will go down to 4lb.  I think they are leader shy, unless the bite is hot, in which case they would probably hit a bait tied directly to mason line.  Just experiment and see what works for you.  Good luck!!!

depends on the time of the year....but if a laker is hungry?....wont matter whatsoever.....I often use an 18-24" coated wire leader.....why?.....if you play them right.....they will roll just before they tire out.....light mono....or floro leads will not cut the mustard.....Grump

I use fluorocarbon leaders for lakers so diameter really isn't an issue since fluoro is basically invisible. I use 12 pound test on tip ups.
I do believe lakers are leader shy. At least in my area they are. They will often stare at a lure for 5 minutes on sonar before finally deciding to hit. Having fluoro over mono as leader increases takes for me.

I use 6 pound monofilament leaders about 8 feet long and have good success.

im with grump. i dont use wire but i use 15lb. yozuri hybrid. their teeth can cut line as easily as a pikes and light leader doesnt hold up to the big ones. on sal. and brookies though i use a 8lb. leader.

12 lb. mono here. I've seen someone fight a 18" bow on 6lb for half an hour. Hate to think of a 20lb laker. I also agree, when lakers are hungry they will hit anything.

I've had consistent luck with the smoke colored yo-zuri.  The only issue I have is that it gets kinks every so often which just means i replace it -probably a function of using the higher lb test.

i use berkeley vanish, 10lb test with a 6lb diameter, and my leaders on all my tip ups are 15' fluoro, and it doesnt matter if they are hungry they will hit anything, but i dont think that they are leader shy, just depends on your setup and how you feel about, always go with your gut. but they just cruise, caught them off bottom and just under the ice

I use 20 lb fire line, why? Because I have had 2 many just snap me off on the hookset useing 12 lb.. That got me sick of wondering how many huge fish I lost.. I have noticed a real difference in the amount of fish I catch and have put a lot more fish in teens on the ice.. I use to be wary of heavy line but this fire line stuff dosn't coil up in the cold it has no memory and blends in with the water pretty good.

I don't think lakers are all that "leader shy" personally, but for better bait action I'd use mono leaders, plus that added stretch will help in battling a big fish. We use 14 pound mono leaders, about 4 feet long.  Half the fun is in the battle anyway. I mean,...no one is actually fishing lakers due to their great table quality, right?  -Jim

I have fished a trap with 2 pound a trap with 8 pound and both of them got fish just as often, the two pound line was a pain in the arse, and was really dissapointing to see a huge long brown streak go right under your hole and feel POP!

I fish 4-6 pound vanish for lakers.

Small lake trout in the 15 - 22" range taste good. Bigger lakers taste like crisco fillets.
