Weird-looking crappie
« on: Dec 18, 2013, 02:59 PM »
So I've been on the ice for a week now after finals ended & today I went crappie fishing and caught the oddest looking crappie in my entire life. The moment I got it out of the hole, I could tell already that the end part of it's body was malformed... I couldn't tell whether it's a growth or it's body got injured by something but anyway, I'm curious as to what you guys think... so here's the pics.

From the look in the bottom photo and the arc of the "dent" it looks to have been bitten and got away earlier in life. See it from time to time on many species. It looks a little thin, may be struggling a little to make it

Spine deformity, genetics not from an injury.

+1, that is what I would of guessed.

If it's what I think it could be, it's called "twirling disease" because when it first shows in young fish it causes them to swim in a twirling fashion.
It's a disease that affects the spinal development in young fry, but if the fish survives it will lead a relatively healthy life, just swimming with a crooked tail.

It was initially documented in trout fry some 20+ years ago.

Just let us know if you ate it, so we can check for any abnormal spinal fin development on you!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

(It doesn't affect the meat of the fish)

I caught one like that a couple weeks ago. I had no idea what caused it either. Thanks for the info guys.
