Truck through the ice
« on: Jan 28, 2015, 10:40 AM »
I had just pulled up to the shoreline of Canyon Ferry and was scoping out a spot to fish when I noticed a small truck out on the ice. The ol'boy driving cranked it over, peeled out, and headed to shore right toward me. As he approached from a couple hundred yards out I began to noticed waves under the ice hitting the shoreline. Ol'boy was coming in too hot! He got within 10' of shore and broke through! He sunk to his fenders and without pausing rolled down his window and yelled to me, "Pull me out?" Haha! It was classic! I pulled him out thankfull he was not hurt and also for my timing for being there to witness it!

Fortunately, his application for a Darwin Award has been rejected.  ::)

Can we give him a dumb a#$ award?  Go ahead and keep driving on ice in Montana and you will find yourself swimming.  Its not a matter of if your going through just a matter of when.

The last time we had a high temp below freezing in Helena was January 15 along with nighttime lows just barely reaching 32 a couple of times recently.  Go figure.  :cookoo:

Where did he break through? Was it near the main ramp? What size truck? Thanks for this info!

El Nino began in December. The NWS has it right this year.

This occurred south of silos, map says Whitehorse but I thought sign said Maysomething, road leads to dike and gated road along dike. Vehicles were parked along shoreline with one access point to lake where small truck went through. Ice was thick away from shore but it was 50 that day and the edge was melting from shore and he was making waves.

coyody, saw it happen, nice of you to pull him out and tried to get the pos truck started. 2 or 3 others tried to jump it but would not start, finally someone pulled him back to Towensend. Best part he was back on the ice today! 2 other people saw a new f150 try to cross a pressure ridge but did not make it. Had 3 trucks trying to pull him out, ended up getting a wrecker out there this am. Sharon also said a car went through someplace north of the boat ramp, other fisherman got the people out but they were in need of a ambulance. Walking does not sound so bad after all.

I fished all the way from the silos to White Earth today the ice was fine. I saw a SUV and a pick up on the ice down past hole in the wall. I wouldn't go out there in a full size vehicle with any ice conditions, there are weak points even when the ice is thick.

Maybe the wrecks will add some new fish structure! Years ago, we were able to drive the shoreline up to hole in the wall. That made it a shorter walk but even the rocky beach was a challenge. I wish the state would make some additional access roads. Maybe a fishing club could sponsor it.
Tight Lines,
