Spirit, Okiboji, or both?
« on: Jan 21, 2013, 03:49 PM »
I'm wanting to head to north Iowa country Thursday/Friday this week. I've seen pics of nice fish on FB from Kabele's trading post but the way it seems on here is that people aren't really having much luck as Kabele's says people are. I think I still wanna check it out regardless. I talked to an ice team rep gave me some names of bait shops in the area to give me some tips for fishing so I'll probably stop in and talk to some of the guys to get some ideas. Anyone got any hints/tips for me? What areas would be best to hit up in a two day trip. Best place to put me on some fish?

Fishing is hit and miss for sure, alot of Kables pics arefrommembers and mainly their guides/guests....Eyes are doing ok on Spirit, perch are slow at best, panfish are the mainstay on West but spotty to, some days are great some are not still a bad day on the ice beats doing anything else...Emerson and Millers seem to be the better for panfish, be mobile and dont be afraid to move around and try different depths and spots untill you contact fish...

Guys are catching perch and yellow bass on the north part of West O in the deeper water.  Just look for the numerous shacks/vehicles.

From my experience this is a false statement, just some first hand info I have since I live 5 miles from there and work within sight of that spot every day....Even fished it a time or 2...

People are catching limits of perch on West you just have to find them. I limited out Saturday and almost did again on Sunday. I talked to other people who got limits too. The fishings only slow for the people in the crowds. I would say the perch fishing is pretty good.

The last perch I caught was Jan 12th 2013 on the north end of West in 40 fow. Haven't been back but when I do ,that will be one of my first areas to fish.

Thanks guys for all the info. Any of you guys had any luck with walleyes? Most of kabele's pics are from spirit lake so I'm assuming that's where they stick to most of the time? I'm looking to go up there Thursday and Frida which is supposed to be the coldest two days of the week.

Are there many campgrounds with electrical hookups? I looked online and there's one on the east side of Spirit and one on the north side of spirit. There's a few around okiboji too. Which ones got spaces with electrical hookups?

People have been driving on spirit for quite some time. Just stay away from the west side.

Thinking of heading up on the 8th or 15th for a couple days.  First time ice fishing the IGL.  any advice would be appreciated.  Looking to catch fish, would love to hook into some perch or eyes but would take a bucket full of gills or crappies.  Don't have to be on the big lakes either.  Thanks!
