The last few days I've been using a forrage minnow jig tipped with wax worms.  The perch seem to like it.   ;D

Try a 1 cm long piece of worm on a #8 hook. Nothing works near as good.

Perch fishing isn't hard, It's just different.

Understanding their movement is the key. They're a schooling fish. They school by year class and they tend to move between deeper water and shallow water feeding areas. You'll need to adapt to fishing deeper water than you're used to when bluegill fishing. This means heavier tackle. (your jig collection is going to grow)

As a rule I start outside weed lines at the entrance to weedy bays. When the fish are relatively inactive you need to be mobile.....keep moving. It's nothing to drop 100 holes in a days fishing. Other times (when the fish are moving)  I will set up my tipdowns in an "entrance area" and work the schools as they move in and out to feed.

It's important to know what they're feeding on. I check stomach contents. If they're full of shrimp I move shallower and fish over the deepest weeds I can find. If they're on minnows, sculpins or clams I move deep and jig with pimples, forage minnows etc.

On deep lakes I fish the slobs like walleye, ripping bigger pimples, rapalas and even bottom rigging with 2 spaced hooks (open water style). I don't use electronics, except on unfamiliar waters,,,,old school I guess.

Like to jig for em through the spearhole then You can watch them take the bait and see when to set the hook.

great suggestions! the worm tip helped, yesterday i went on an impromptu ice fishing trip, i was duck hunting with my dad and brother, we decided to bring some 6' rods if there was a good looking spot on the river, we stopped by a frozen lake that this guy was just getting off of he said he caught about 30 perch and said we were free to use his holes if we wanted, the ducks weren't flying so we took our rods down to his holes baited a regular hook with some worm and in an hour and a half we caught 115 perch, one small puny trout hooked a giant suckerfish and kept 33 of the perch ranging from 10" to 12". hot fishing with crappy gear and used holes. it was pretty much like this guy :icefish:

That's 1.1 fish per minute, not second. Still impressive, but plausible. ;D
