Be Careful Out There!
« on: Dec 06, 2007, 11:14 AM »
This unfortunate story was in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel this morning.

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- A Chippewa County man riding an ATV broke through the ice on Pike Lake and died.

Investigators said the 60-year-old man was at the Shady Nook Bar on Pike Lake, then headed out on the lake.

The Sheriff's Department said people in the bar saw the man fall through the ice and called 911.

Divers searched the icy water and recovered the man's body at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, four hours after he was reported missing.

Check conditions before driving across!

Have fun, stay safe this season.

That's pretty sad. I wonder how much alcohol-fueled bravado had to do with it. "Hey, guys. I bet that ice is safe for my four-wheeler." That's why they were all looking out the window, I imagine.

Or they were worried about him. I was on a lake yesterday  and there was about 2 1/2" of ice, and someone had driven their snowmobile across the ice in 2 different spots, I don't know how fast they went across,, or maybe the ice was thicker in that spot.
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

I hate hearing these stories every year.  A few years back I had a guy ask me how much ice  was on the lake we were at.  I told him I was gonna check the ice depth.  I seen a few people had walked out about and drilled a hole ever 5 feet to about 30 feet out.  This idiot just drives his fourwheeler and shanty out on the ice without checking it.  I said "Dude, check the ice!!" he just waves.  I watched him drive about 150 yds out, and set up.  Ice must of been decent.  After 10 minutes I left.  People like him make me wonder. Specially with snow on the ice, I dunno how he could of been able to tell how much ice was there.
