Plastic bait storage OOPS, need input
« on: Jul 18, 2020, 07:08 PM »
In an effort to conserve space, I placed a bunch of various manufacturer's baits in smaller individual polyethylene bags and labeled them. I did not combine any or mix different ones together. Today, I opened the tackle box and noticed the labels appear to be wicking the lubricant or scent right through the plastic bag and it's beginning to smear the labels. I can feel the oily residue on my fingers, too.

Any thoughts on whether a thicker bag would stop this or should I be looking for a bag from a different material? A quick look at McMaster Carr only show polyethylene, no small polypropylene. The bags I'm using are definitely a different material than original but I didn't expect this to happen. I'll keep searching for other bag material, too.
Maybe someday I'll think of something clever to write here...but I doubt it.

I get laminated worm bags from barlows for my plastics that work really well, not too expensive

Whatever essential oils they are using for scent (most likely anise) are decomposing whatever the bag is made of. I make my own beard oils and skin balms and have had essential oils eat right the rubber/silicone dropper seals in the caps if left long enough. Turns them into a gooey mess. Anise was no exception. My suggestion would be to use bags specifically made for plastics storage.

What does it smell like?

I have a couple of bags of the Little Atom Nuggies, they smell like anise oil. Some of the others have a smell, no doubt the proprietary liquid they use, can't really describe them but they do smell. The smell differs between manufacturers, of course.
I have some polypropylene bags coming, I'll see if that makes a difference.

Lesson learned, keep them in original packaging and figure out a better way to make storage room!

Now there's a good idea; I'm going to have to give that a think-through.

Happen to have a pic of which style you're using?

Thank you, that's pretty much what I was thinking you meant. I know some old tackle boxes weren't "wormproof" and the plastics would melt to the trays or dividers; but you're not experiencing anything like that with these pill boxes? That's very encouraging to me and might be the storage answer for me. I should be seeing the other bags shortly and will try a couple of those to see how they react.

Well, it turns out the big offender was the Euro Tackle products. Every one of the different styles and sizes I have were causing the problem. I've put them in the cellophane envelopes and we'll see if that solves the problem. The other culprit was the Berkley Power Bait Whip tails; they were wicking through as well.

I really like the pill dispenser idea, too. That may be the better system in the end.
