Walleye First Time??
« on: Feb 10, 2015, 10:06 PM »
I hope I don't get beat up on this to much and I'm sure its been asked.........but here I go lol. Ok I live in Chesterfield Mi right on the bay/lake, I've have been ice fishing for over 25+ years on and off. I never pulled a walleye up out of the ice yet  :'( I was just wondering if anybody would be willing to help me out make that a reality? I don't need to know every little secret but need a little help and pointers plz. Now if this was spring/summer/fall then I have no problems with them lol  It would be great to meet up with a few guys and go out on the ice and make it happen. Thanks
Charles E.

If your ever in the saginaw/bay city area.. we could probably make that happen for ya.  Bite has been a bit slow lately, so cant make promises though. There's hundreds of thousands of eyes in the system.  Much better chances than on any inland lake.  Eyes are the only species I target on the hard water.

Walleyman, depends on where you want to fish, near mouth or west of the Z bridge.

There is a tiny town just west of the Z bridge that has an access point, and anotherone just past that little town.  Anywhere on the river should produce over the next few weeks though, the fish are going to start moving back into the river.

I've never fished the bay, primarily due to not having a machine.  There are other guys that might respond to this and sort of escort you out to an area....possibly blindfolded  ;D

walleyeman - find a gang to follow out of Linwood.  Ice is pretty good, but there are open holes....safety in numbers.  Just ask and about anyone will let you follow them.  Once you get past the second crack, look for 17+fow and start fishing.  They've been doing pretty good.  If you don's see anything in 1/2 hr, move.
g'luck and stay on top

There has been many many people through the ice out of linwood. There are areas the size of several football fields with thin ice and it is all covered in snow now.. If your not following out someone who has been out there a lot recently, I would use a different access.

I've never caught a walleye thru the ice either. Everything else but no walleye.

Personally, I couldn't jig a walleye to save my life, or for a million bucks. But, I catch a whole bunch of them using blues or smaller goldens. All I do is hook the minnow behind the dorsal fin lightly, I use a small treble hook and try not to hit to much muscle on there back, makes them swim harder longer, I put a medium sinker about a foot up the line. I then fish them 1-2 feet from bottom, I try not to fish in thick weeds, but along the edge, even if you have just a few clumps of high weeds where you are at, they seem to show up. I do the same with my tip-ups, but I tend to put them closer to the bottom, say a foot, the lake I fish 20 foot of water is good for me, they come and go. The last thing, don't leave right after dark, I get most of my bigger ones later at night.
