Brandon Anglers let's discuss the Mighty Assiniboine
« on: Feb 10, 2007, 08:59 AM »
Brandon or any anglers has anyone ever tried fishing the Assiniboine during the hardwater season. You don't have to tell us your spot but more that you have tried it. I really want to try it but to be honest I am scared like hell of hitting the river bottom with my auger and I don't trust the ice thickness. Anyone out there? How about the Winnipeg anglers and the Assiniboine in Winnipeg. This river has so many prime areas during the open water season.

BW you would have to be careful not to drill into a rock lots of shallow areas. You would also have to be visible because of alot of fast snowmoble traffic.

North of 3rd st dam should be deep enough a long that area right up the bridge at 18th st.

Use a vex or other flasher to get the depth through the ice before you start punching holes.

Try on "most" outside bends in the river . Sharper the bend the deeper it should be .  ???

Never fished there so this is only a guess ???
What am I doing sitting in front of this computer ..............
I should be out fishing

Used to fish it south east of Brandon,  never ever caught anything in the winter.  Summer is sensational when the water gets clean.  The fish must be there somewhere under the ice,  most people are too scared to move around much.

Use to catch all kinds of pike and perch in Wawanesa  from the dam back all the way back to the first bend behind the school.

Yes Bw our day for a fishing trip will be in the near future. I grew up around Forrest and later lived in Wheat City for 22 years. It is nice to talk to people that have the passion for fishing like I do. This is why I love Ice Shanty.

Has anyone ever tried fishing below the 1st street dam in the winter time. yes it is open water and at times may not be possible due to ice along the shoreline but I bet if you can there are some dandy hawg wallies waiting for a tasty lure.

BW i have ice fished the river in the spruce woods park sure turned alot of heads
there was aprox. 18" of ice wit open water along the edge had to make a bridge to get across
We did manage to catch 3 walleyes but there was alot of current would highly recommend fishing with
a buddy and a long rope just in case the river can very unpredictable good one day bad the next
