Down the hole...
« on: Jan 05, 2018, 07:27 AM »
RIP: Can-of-Beans 2017-2018.  :(

It had just started bubbling and been ready to eat when the cans holding up the grate began to lean, toppled, and it slid off onto the ice. I watched horrified as it then rolled, almost as if magnetically attracted, toward the hole and then into it... diving right down, leaving a contrail of maple flavored beans behind it.

The question is.........Did it have a chumming affect ???
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to ice fish, have his wife mad for ever.

That not going to work. Make a grill out of a metal paint roller.

Lost my cell phone down a hole once.  Had it sitting on my lap & reached over to turn the heat down in the shanty from the lazy boy ... phone slid off my lap ... hit the floor ... bounced ... hit the ice and started doing like a toilet bowl swish around the lip of the hole as i watched afraid to try and grab it.  by the time i figured out i should try and do something it plopped into the water.  That was on a monday of a week long trip ... luckily i was due for an upgrade so we took a ride to town the next day and the verizon store.

I think i'd be more upset about the beans ....

Anything that CAN fall down the hole WILL if not properly restrained. Ice holes do have a gravitational pull just like black holes.

I lost a phone too. 5 feet away from the hole, bounced right in. I pulled it out just to check the time. I didn't even get service where I was at.

My old frabil tent had 2 rectangular frames to hold the thing “popped up “ and a ten inch or so brace in between to hold them apart, we’ll in the Wyoming wind on day the brace popped out and... nothing but net! Right down the hole
Easy does it.
Let them go so they can grow.

That hot rack looks great.  $30...???  I know people make their own but I am not real skilled as a craftsman which is why I am considering the $30...although I think that is too high (1/2 a new buddy heater).  Any other premade options out there that are a bit more economical?

Picture in original post is the way to go with cooking on the buddy, instead of cans for a prop one can use some coat hanger wire to create a couple of supports from the grate back down to the face of the heater.  The painted metal surrounding the ceramic on the face of the buddy conveniently has lots of holes for the supports to hook into.

Whoah...LOL.

I had once had a plastic bottle with juice.  Now there was some air in that bottle too.  But when it slid into the hole with the ice melt on floor and took a dive.  I only realized...juice is heavier than water.

One time my coleman duel fuel lantern did the same on the floor with ice melt.  I heard a water splash, a hissing sizzle, and light's out.  "Fire in the hole!"  I fished for that lantern in deep water.  Can't remember if it was 50' or 80'.  Biggest fish I ever fought, I mean lantern.  The jigging rap saved the day.  Lucky the plastic bag with spare mantels at the base of the lantern on stand wasn't open as of yet.

A $3 paint roller grate is my method of choice for cooking on my Mr. Buddy. Skip to 5 minutes in to see it in action.

I had a can of chunky clam chowder fall off my little buddy heater one time. Bullseyed the hole. I pulled the can out of the hole but it was empty! Dang I got hungry that day. Figured with all that chum I was gonna have a hot hole but I didn't get a fish out of that hole for the rest of the day.

The next day I picked up a little lp camp stove.

Was camping once a friend was cooking a can of beans by the fire but one thing he forgot... to open the can first. The can exploded beans flying  everywhere. He looks over and says looks like the beans are ready.

Last week I was cooking chili in the shelter when I jumped up for a bite and tipped it over.  Wish it had gone in the hole!   :P
