I'm looking to buy an auger. What's the fastest hand auger out there (prefer 5" or 6").

Quite honestly..... i think your BIGGEST concern in having a fast hand auger is going to be keeping good sharp blades. the thing you may want to check out is the type of blades..... they have ones that can be sharpened and ones that are considered replaceable. things to keep in mind with that..... do you have the ability to sharpen them urself? or would you just be buying new ones anyhow? just theink about stuff like that and then when drilling the hole.... just keep a lot of downward pressure on it and i even drill thru 2 feet of ice in no time..........

I did an experiment last season with the Nils 8" hand auger and a 6" SM Lazer. My buddy used the SM and I the NM - the Nils won. To be fair we swapped and I used the SM and he used the NM - the Nils won. The speed was not what impressed me as much as the ease. Keep in mind this was the 8" NM versus the 6" SM. If anything it was biased in the Lazers favor. JMO  ;D

WaterWolfed,
Yes  I did. I own both types and I have friends that have Mora's and lasers.

Believe what you want. I'm only answering the question.

It sounds like the Nils Master is the way to go. Are the blades easy to care for? I think I've seen them in Cabela's are there more places to find the Nils Master.

I had my 7" lazer ten years and have been happy with mine. Blades are easily replacable and no I havn't spun a nils. Sounds as if this is the way to go but I seen the blade setup and that might be the deciding factor.

Tony or anyone else,  Where can one pick up a Nils or Fin bore 3 via the net?  What would be the estimated cost on one of these units.  I have considered one of these as a backup and am very interested. ;)  -Barleydog

barleydog--i gave my old 8" finbore to my father-in-law several years ago. great hand auger-the only thing i didn't like at the time, was the cutting head was one piece with no replacement blades. i see they now have them. i think the secret to these augers is the curved blades which reduce downward pressure. not sure where you can get them up there at the north pole but canadian tire sells the finbore III here in canada. lol grumpymoe :'( :'(

Barleydog,
I got mine from Cabelas. The 8 inch was $99.00 plus shipping.
I got mine as a backup also...It's all that I have taken out so far...
I just cannot believe how the thing goes through the ice.
I hope that my Jiffy will get some use this season. :D

 >:(Moe, You know living in the "North Pole" has it's advantages!  For example, I eat lunch with the "big guy" (no not Rosie O'Donnell), Santa, and he wanted to know if you were a good little boy or if he could hook you up with some stinkbait in your stocking this year!  No Canadian tire up here, but there is a Sears!  Thnks for the reply good advice on the Finbore :)
Wyoice, I did find them in Cabelas, but didn't like the price.  Wondering if theres another outlet on the net that's cheaper? ;D  Thanks!!!

Tony, I knew my blade comment would nip me in the but. ;) They did look easy to replace. I was thinking more towards cost of buying a knew cuttining head rather then just blades. Mine I can get for around $15 but then you say they are compairable in price. One advantage I can see is they bolt up to a power head, Correct?

Barleydog,
I think that spectacular Sports are $10.00 cheaper than Cabelas for the 4.5 in.  ($59.99) and the 6in. (79.99). The 8 in. is the same price $99.99.
That's as cheap as I've found them.
I do not know what shipping out of New York would be?
Hope this helps.
