Earliest You've Been On Ice?
« on: Nov 23, 2018, 04:43 PM »
I know it will be awhile but I was curious as to what are some of the earliest times you been able to get on the ice?  I also know where you are in NYS makes a difference. I was excited to be on the week after Christmas last year.

I'm scouting out a spot and tomorrow it's a good chance I'll be on the ice. I walked on it this morning but it's scetchy I'm hoping tomorrow it will be safe. If so tomorrow will be the earliest for me.

I found 4" of ice and it felt great. I usually don't fish for bass through the ice but it's early and I'll take whatever I can get.

Dec. 5th. 1988...Hamlin Lake...Ludington, Mi. No ice on local lakes so buddy and I skipped work and headed north 2 hrs. to find 3" of "iffy" ice (we were young and dumb back then). Temps. in mid 30's. About 6' of water and limited out in 2 hrs. of gills that were no less than 9" and several of the 10" variety. Perfect weather...shallow water...nice fish...well worth the day off work.  ;)2

I use to chase  the ice  like   you all but  instead of driving 100 miles to be on 3 inches of is I discoved I can be fishing open water  in comfort and catching  a easy limit of  perch or walleyes and I  don't have to drive more then 20 minutes and that includes the time to stop and get a coffee at the drive thru......^5 to the  guys  and  your catches  and I really am glad your   getting fish  I hope my water  stays open  for a little  while longer  and i'm not  going to set and wait  for  ice either  ....GOOD LUCK and fish no matter how  you fish

I thought about chasing ice this past weekend but I figured 6 hours time in the car for the round trip would be better spent in a treestand  …..  and I was right  @)

This season. Got out twice in November. First was the 19th, found 2.5 inches of ice. Then yesterday, found up to 7 inches of solid black ice.

Mainly perch, but caught a fallfish on ice for the first time.
