I have seen multiple pictures in multiple threads of people that have made rod holders out of pvc and mounted them to the outside of their bucket. My question is how do you cut the notch into the pvc that the reel handle fits into?

Try using a Jig saw with a short blade

....or a Dremel tool if you have one.. Use the fiber cut off wheel.. John ;D

thats how I do mine. Just wear safety glasses that wheel will be throwing around melted blobs of pvc.

I used a drill and a 1" bit to make the rounded part on the bottom, and then used a small hacksaw to cut the rest of the way through to the top. I didn't have a rivit gun at the time, so I used zip ties to hold them in place. They haven't moved in years.

My version..... you don't need to worry about that. Plastic pipe straps. Smitty

I like that Smitty takes a lot of work out of it! ;)

How long is it from your reel seat to the end of the handle... I feel like mine is really short and Smittys Method might not stabilize them.

smitty0312: Are those 1" Pipe Straps? What is the black band for near the top edge.... Velcro????

I can't remember what size they are...probably 1"(sorry I don't know for sure)......and yes it is velcro at top to secure rods a little more. Smitty

Cut up old golf bag tubes and duct tape them to your bucket.Works grat and no hole in your bucket.Looks a little ugly but efficient.
-
Cut mine with a straight bit in the router. threw together a jig with a guide to put the pipe in. 20 minutes to put the jig together, 2 minutes to cut the pvc.

Well this post inspired me to make my own.
You may laugh but I used an old yellow wiffel ball bat instead of PVC pipe.
The plastic is strong and easy to cut.
You can get 4 rod holders out of one bat.
I'll post some pics when I can.

D-flag whatever it takes, as long as it works for you. all the pvc and nuts and bolt's were stuff i had laying around.

I used 1-1/4 PVC pipe, cut to 8-1/2 inches long. Notch was 3-1/4 inches long by 3/4 inches wide. Notch was cut using a dremel cutting wheel (not the metal ones, but one that looks like a circular saw blade) and I used it in my rotozip. I then sanded and buffed all of the edges to make them rounded and smooth. Then used rivets to connected them. Also made a scoop holder as well using 1" PVC pipe and a cap.

Old vacumn cleaner tubes are lighter than pvc as are the golf club tubes. Tie wraps are also good and light !!!!!!
