Atlantic Salmon caught through the ice
« on: Feb 06, 2023, 12:27 PM »
According to the Bangor Daily News someone caught a good-sized Salmon through the ice on an Eastern Maine Lake.   The guy let it go but took a picture and they traced it back to being from the Craig Book hatchery.  The clip one of the fins when they stock them and this one was identified that way.  They have done a lot of restoration work on the traditional Salmon rivers DownEast and perhaps it's beginning to pay off just a little. I know one holdover Salmon isn't a big deal but its a beginning.  They didn't identify the lake by my guess is Beddington Lake or Pleasant River Lake.  Either way it was quite a catch and they guy will have a lifetime memory.

The article said the fish was caught on a lake without the S-33 rule. Beddington and Pleasant River lakes both have that rule.

Ok what's your best guess since they didn't name the lake.

Correct.  So what's your best guess since mine is wrong?

I don't know that part of Maine so I don't have a guess.

It does not matter where it was caught, and honestly shouldn't be shared by those in the know. The lake it was caught out of absolutely does not need a  S-33 rule added to it. Chances of it being a 1 off are very good, if it becomes a common occurrence, the S-33 rule could be revisited.

I don’t care where it was caught. Not gonna go there to try to catch one. Just want to know the answer to the trivia question

Like a lot of ice fisherman if I had to guess, they did not realize it was an Atlantic. Once they were informed, it had already been posted and the FB world had taken it and run with it. Pretty good change they wont make that mistake again.

Years ago an Ebeeme pond fisherman caught an Atlantic Salmon . I was told it was open all way to ocean.
