Thank you for the update roof looks great. Just curious do you do you check in with a friend each day while working at the cabin so they know you are safe.

PFFFFFT!!!! NO!!!!
I even go camping in the middle of nowhere 80 miles from civilization by myself too.
If it's my time then it's my time. ;)
At the cabin I have internet and cell phone service so I'm always posting on FB so I think someone would notice if I stopped.
At least I hope they would.

Having cell service on an island is what I call good cell service, too bad the cell companies here in the United States don't have that good of service.  Who's your cell company?

I get a good signal up at the cabin but it sucks down at the dock.
That's one of the reasons I built on top of the hill.
Should get a good sat signal fer me TV up there too. ;)

Three day long weekend at the lake.
Unfortunately the weather was sucky for most of it but it gave me time to do some inside work.
Finally finished the last couple of floor joists in the loft and got the rest of the floor sheathing done.
Then I got the landing done and started on the stairs.

On Monday the weather finally broke and I got to spend the day on the roof.
Managed to get the ridge venting and tin work finished as well as the caulking that needed to be done.
The roof is FINISHED!!!!!!! I hope I don't need to go up there for a while now.  ;)

That's good that you got the roof finished, I'm sure that's a relief for you.  Out of curiosity, how did you end up picking this island to build the cabin on?  Did you have to file a claim or buy the island?

It's not an island. It's actually a peninsula.
A few years ago the Feds opened up leasing again it was a little land rush.
You went out and found a good spot and it had to be 1000' from any other building or lease.
I was lucky enough to be one of only 55 people that managed to get a lease in the short time it had opened up. :)
The day they opened it up I was in the office for the paperwork.
The following morning it was filed and they told me at that time I was far enough away from the next closest lease and it was going to be approved.
Got the paperwork back confirming all was good 6 months later.   ::)
Only then did I believe I had a place to call my own.   ;D

Siding starts after that is complete.  ;)

That's nice that they did that and great that you got it, I guess it's a lifetime lease or something like that.

Dave, do you have to renew the lease every so often? does the lease cost anything? You have it made Buddy. If I ever get up that way, I'll give you a shout.

I'm still on the original 5 year lease but when it's renewed for 30 years.
Costs me about 150 bucks a year.

Holy smokes, that's a GREAT DEAL if there ever was one.  Heck for that price I'd live there year round if I had that deal.

Is there a limit to how many times you can renew the lease and can you transfer it to someone or leave it to someone in your will?

Drifter,

I just bought a deeded property (with a burn down moose hunting cabin) on a fly-in lake, 100 air miles north of me in N/W Ontario.  I intend to build a new cabin, and am ready to begin the process of looking at cabin plans.  I know that there has always been bear problems there, so I will go with metal roof and siding, not log.  All material will go in the hard way, it is a long way from anywhere.  Since you have already started this process on yours, do you have any words of wisdom or thoughts, it is always nice take from other people's experiences. Thank you.

Words of wisdom?
Take your time and if possible sled in your materials in the winter.
Flying in the materials gets spendy in a hurry.
Most importantly have fun. ;)

Was back at er again this weekend.
Managed to get my cribs assembled and installed.
Also got the land based dock section leveled out finally. It's been bugging the crap out of me for three years!!!!  :)
Even managed to load about a ton of rock into the cribs. Still lots to go.

Still need to fill in the section where the dock meets land to smooth it out.

Got a little more work done on the stairs to the loft as well.

Almost forgot. This rolled in Friday night.
Air quality was horrible!!!

What did you get some smoke from one of the fires.

You could see smoke from one of the Canadian fires clear down in the central lower peninsula of Michigan on satellite pictures the other day.
