Very true although couldn't the ice stabilize temps a little rather than alllowing it to mix and super cool from top to bottom?

GOOD !!! ... It should help cut down on the LAKE EFFECT snow in West Michigan where I plan to be "field-testing" and shooting video in a couple of days.

People in Oswego County will tell you that Lake Ontario is still very much open right now.

And why would that be?  ;D  Oh you mean the snow measured in fathoms? :%$#!:

They are officially measuring today, but there's a good chance that they are going to break the record for a 1 week snowfall. Unofficial measurements are 11'4" in seven days ..... That's ALOT of snow.

From the National Weather Service....

Public Information Statement

Statement as of 7:58 PM EST on February 12, 2007

... Snowfall reports verified east of Lake Ontario...

On Monday afternoon, National Weather Service representatives
conducted a survey of the areas east of Lake Ontario to confirm
the tremendous snowfall from the recent lake effect storm.

The highest storm total from the event was reported at Redfield in
Oswego County where 141 inches occurred over a 10-day stretch from
February 3rd through February 12th.

Officials also cleared up some confusion about whether this was a
record for a storm. They noted that comparing a 3 day event to one
that spans 10 days is like comparing apples and oranges. Therefore
this multi-Day Lake effect snow event cannot be referred to as a
record.

However, this does not take away from the fact that the storm totals
were extreme. Those who live in the region are familiar with large
snowfalls. In December of 2001, 127 inches of snow was recorded in
just 6 days in the town of Montague, only a few miles down the Road
from Redfield. In Barnes Corners, 54 inches of snow fell in a 24
hour period on January 9, 1976.

The 10-Day Lake effect snow event officially ended today as snow
winded down to nothing more than a few flurries. This will give the
Tug Hill region only a very brief break as a large scale snow
storm approaches the region from the Midwest. The National Weather
Service has posted heavy snow warnings for the region east of Lake
Ontario for Tuesday night through Wednesday for as much as 12 to 18
inches of additional snowfall. More Lake effect snow is possible
later in the week for some of the same areas hit hardest by the
recent storm.

Other snowfall reports from trained snowfall observers included:

Parish 121 inches
Mexico 106 inches
North Osceola 106 inches

We could sure use some of that snow here in Wyoming. Where I live we had a total of 5" precipitation for all of 2006. Bring it on!

Sorry, but map or no map, Lake Michigan is NOT frozen in the Grand Traverse Bay/Leelanau Peninsula (little finger)area of the northwest lower peninsula or as far south down the shoreline to at least Ludington.  Living in the area, I can attest to that.

Maybe you should send Tom Skilling an email and set the record straight. The only email I can find is this one: [email protected]
