New sled
« on: Dec 15, 2011, 05:07 PM »
Started a new sled idea. Getting as light as I can think of. Gotta add a couple pieces of PVC underneath to keep them from filling with snow yet.

Looks good I would maybe raise your crates up a lil for snow drag, but those things butted all together are like a tank, great idea!
Did ya read the fine print on your crates?  ;)

I hope the milk crate police don't read or see your post. You could be in for some hard time for such an offense. You know milk would be a lot cheaper if you would quit stealing all their crates. Nice job on the sled, although I agree that mounting the crates on a 2x4 or 2x6 on edge might help from snowplowing in deeper snow.

We all know what they say but I have seen several in the trash or at auctions. Has anyone really ever been
fined? Come on!

Gonna mount on a 4" piece of PVC to raise it up.  They aren't to concerned about milk crates they're all over eBay.

I did a similar sled years ago before I got a shelter.  It had a single line of three crates.  It worked well to haul stuff.  Mine had a rectangular wooden frame on top of 2x6 spacers to lift the crates above the snow cover.  I hung my bait bucket off the back of the sled.  The bottom rested on the wooden frame and the top got bungied to the crate.  The frame had lots of holes drilled for bungie cord hooks.  I mounted PVC tube vertically on the outside of the crates for rod and skimmer holders.  It hauled easily over deep snow and fit easily in the back of my SUV.

It did have a couple deficiencies.
The square milk crate limits the size of what you can put in them.  You can find rectangular crates that will fit longer objects.  Carrying long objects (5-gal buckets, tipups or rods) vertically limits how you can lash gear on top of the crates.
I used a folding chair for a seat.  It got bungied to the top alongside my hand auger.
Since all the crates are open mesh, small items can fall through the mesh.  With the open mesh crates, there is no weather tight space, so rain or snow will get into the crates and can soak all your gear and any extra clothes you might carry.  You can add a tarp or a waterproof bag to protect stuff that must stay dry.
Stacking stuff on top makes the sled top heavy and tippy.  I dumped the whole thing over a few times.  A double wide would be more stable and wide water skis would be great.
Everyone has to believe in something.  I believe I'll go fishing.
