Trout/Panfish Micro-Jigs
« on: Nov 22, 2014, 08:07 PM »
OK folks, I'm looking for a little help here.

Years ago, Cabela's carried some very tiny jigs.  They pretty-much looked like crappie jigs to me, but they were in tiny sizes.  I'm talkin' 1/32 and 1/64 oz.  They called 'em something like Trout/Panfish Micro-Jigs.  I bought a ten-year supply ten years ago, apparently.  I'm looking for more, in black and olive (dark green).

Not straight maribou jigs, but like this:

Anybody have a source?  TIA.

Tie some up or find somebody who can . It's a very simple jig to learn how to tie.

Yes they are probably a fairly easy thing to tie up.
Buy a cheap fly tieing vice and/or a cheap kit and get started tying your own.
Lots of you tube tutorials on how to make that kind of stuff.
I just started tying bucktail jigs and it is fun.
I 've been casting and painting my own jigs for years but never have I tried tying anything. It is fun and I plan to do a lot more of it in the future.

They are very simple tie.   Feather / chenille.
You can buy the painted heads or get a do- it mold and pour in bismuth or lead if legal in your area
Then paint your own patterns

A vice is no more than $15 for the cheap non-adjustable one everybody sells. Then just purchase some marabou and chenille and you're all set!

You can make those very easily. I make them all of the time.

I make all of my ice crappie jigs on #10 hooks
1/32
1/64
1/80
1/100
1/120

Look on crappie.com in the lure making section for instructions on how to tie crappie jigs. Then just downsize them to an ice-sized lure.

And a bobbin, bobbin threader, scissors, whip tool, thread of several colors, head cement, and some jig heads.  ;)

Thanks everyone for the replies.  Keep 'em comin'.  I'm searching out all the links.

I have zero fly tying equipment, but this may yet push me over the edge.

Steve you might also consider something like this. I make theses myself, not sure if you can find them online or not. Probably can.

It uses a cut hackle tail instead of a marabou tail, which gives it more of a darting action instead of that leech swimming action of marabou. I started using these last winter and throughout the entire open water season this outfished any marabou jig I tried 20:1.

Just something I thought I'd pass along.

I think those in the picture are 1/64 on #8 hooks, the picture is from this spring when I was absolutely nailing the crappies on those under an ice bobber the day after the ice went off the local lakes. Can't wait to drop one down a hole in the ice this year!

Steve, if you would like to try those in the picture, PM me your address and I'll drop a couple in the mail.

Another thing I can't wait to try them on is trout! As soon as the trout lake freezes over that is!

I would only say the bobbin is actually necessary, the others are just nice to have :)

I tie all my own flies and jigs.  I can do jigs down to 1/80th size 12 sickle hooks.

I will warn you, though.  Once you start down the slope of tying flies/jigs, it is a very steep, slippery slope from which there is no return......
