First fish of the year
« on: Nov 13, 2009, 10:50 AM »
I am getting way too excited to fish. Shack is already built, the auger was checked to make sure she runs, tipups got some new line and hooks.

I have begun thinking of what's going to happen when I catch my first fish. Is there anything special you guys do? Sometime to pay a little respect for mother nature and to smile about.

So what do you guys like to do when that first fish comes up through the ice??

Toss it on the ice, and get back down... :icefish:
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

Usually toss the first one back on any fishing trip where I plan on keeping some. First of the season or first of the day.

I usually crack another cold one and collect a dollar from my fishing buddies. We always go a buck for the first fish.

performing the sacred fish dance for my daughters is an annual ritual. I'm really hoping one of them catch the first fish this year, my fish dance is not what it used to be

If it`s a smelt, it`s a (not so  ::) ) well known custom to bite the head off!!!  :o

As a matter of course, then you put it on your jigging lure ie, Swedish Pimple, and send it down for more!  8)

I'm a big fan of planting a wet one on the first fish of any trip out. The first fish of the year gets the same kiss as my girlfriend. Don't tell HER though. Of course I'm talking about the fish.

hopefully the first fish is a keeper so it can stay on the ice and wait for the  rest to join him ;D

I do this when me and my dad fish, dollar for the first fish, dollar for the most, and a dollar for the biggest.

As for my first fish of the season usually depends on the size, keepers come home, little ones get the "send mom treatment" and back down the hole.
Tight lines and safe fishing.

I ALWAYS release the first fish... unless it's a keeper...
