Title: 6'x8' Tip Down Shack
Post by: lazyMlazyK on Jan 26, 2022, 02:08 PM
There's a fiberglass shack up for blind bid at my work, and I'm thinking about putting in a bid.  It's a 6'x8' shack, resting on a couple of beams.  I've been thinking about making a shack similar to Beeler's tip-down that he showed a couple of years ago, and think this might be a candidate for the build (especially considering the cost of lumber these days).  It would be nice to build it onto a frame that sets down on the ice, but in my area, I should be able to pick up an old boat trailer for the cost of new drop axles.  Trying to keep things on the cheaper side.

Do you all think this would make an alright shack?

Has anyone built a permanent shack from a fiberglass shack/shed?

I've had thoughts of building a tip down, big enough to put my quad inside , then use it to pull out on the ice.

I’ve had this idea myself. But I found building it strong enough to hold an atv had made it difficult to flip. And then I found an atv had trouble pulling it in snow.

I think it could be done. Using a old boat trailer you could pick it up and pull it down with the quad. Build some ski's to slide under the wheels when you go on the ice. There's ways to do it. Take a little time to think it out, build a little bit, try it out. Have fun with the build.

I didn’t mean to discourage a build. You are right it can be done. Using the atv is how I have to tip mine. Which isn’t a big deal but before I built I was expecting to be a fast procedure and that I would move multiple times a day to stay on fish. But I find it more a pain to move than a skid shack and am starting to think about different shack styles.

Joe, you're not discouraging me to build one of these, I think it's a great idea, and glad to see that others are doing it.

Well, I ended up not winning the bid on the shack  :(  Someone must have had deeper pockets than me.  That's alright I guess, I've got a rifle build in the works that could use some time & money thrown at it  @)

Has anyone built a permanent shack from a fiberglass shack/shed?

I've seen two on the ice. One has a chimney for a wood stove.
