There are some really good tips on here. I've tried and do a few of them. I'll have to try the rest. One thing not mentioned was hydrating. Lots of water. During and after. I'm only 30, but I've done heavy lifting at work for 13 years. Nothing works like morning stretching and hydrating. Even when I'm drinking beer, water too

Now that I'm a old man,I can't do the every day dawn to dusk rout. Two herniated discs, not the greatest knees, dragging sleds, cutting 30 or more hole with my jiffy pro 4(38) lbs, unpacking the truck, loading the truck getting home after dark and cleaning fish for and hour or more is enough WORK. IM AN EVERY OTHER DAY GUY. A hot shower 3 asprins, a couple of beers and I'm done . I need to rest a day then back to fishing. I average 3 -4 days a week ice time. That's the only fishing time I get. I've soft water fished less than 50 times in the last 20 years. Gotta make money.

One little quick tip that may help is cold showers. I've been doing it for years. It seems to limit pain after football.
Other uses for cold showers, even at 68!

I'm 66 years young and I fish a lot, just keep fishing, maybe do some stretches before you go out, that's what a physical therapist
told me to do 6 years ago, it works. ;D

It's a fine line between taking too much gear and your comfort level. Too much gear and you'll lose interest in going out and setting up, especially short trips. Not enough gear and you will lose interest in staying on the ice and toughing it out. Had  a couple nice surprises this year because I toughed it out after a long day of nothing. Then again, I have a short day of overtime this afternoon, but too lazy to gout this morning.
I also use a cheap, folding directors chair rather than a bucket. Also, old milk crates are nice for some gear and make a nice little table  in the slush and snow.
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and you'll never see him again....
