Crappie length
« on: Mar 21, 2005, 10:58 AM »
This year I realy got into identifying the fish that I caught. I would say that I got probibly 300 to 400 crappie. It seems like the white crappie gets bigger than the black ones. There is a restriction on the one lake of 9" and its been in place for 3 or 4 years now. Every black crappie needed to be measured while if you got a white one it was sure to be a keeper. Another lake I fished there isn't a size limit but all the black's were around 8 to 9" for the biggest and I had many whites to 12" or 13" . I was just wondering if this is the normal.

My lakes don't have white crappie, so I don't know about them

but with the black crappie, in one lake the average 6-7"  with no larger ones
In another they average 9" with many around 13-15" (didn't freeze this year)
and in another they are almost always 10-13", no bigger, no smaller.
Each ecosystem is different!
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

well the world record black crappie is 6-0 lbs while the white is 5-3 lbs-oz.  In Mn it is the same way with balcks being slightly larger then the white crappies.
