What's the best way to set up lights?
« on: Oct 15, 2012, 07:35 PM »
I am getting a Frabill Commando and think that lights might come in handy. I don't have any idea how to set them up or provide power. Any suggesions would be appreciated.

i put a single LED light strip on the top bar and it is brighter than i actually even need it.
I ran the wire to the side then over the poles and down the back of the shanty.
I have the Trekker Maxx so  i just ran the wires under the shell and put a switch and a inline fuse to a flasher battery
I bought my LED light strip from fleetfarm

Best way is to buy a flexible LED strip. You want these http://www.oznium.com/led-flex-strips I suggest one 19" strip.

It will come with a small section of 24 gauge wire. Strip it and use the smallest connectors you can find to attach it to some 20 gauge wire. Mount the strip to your top bar with the LEDs pointing where you want them. Secure it with zip ties.

Run your wires (pos and neg) down one of the poles. Wrap duct tape or electrical tape every few inches to make sure it is secure. Go fancy with this, no need for standard gray.. pink looks nice.

Next you will need to wire in a rocker switch. Very simple.

Your positive coming from the light goes to one of the pins on the back of the switch. Off the other prong you will run another positive line with an inline 3amp fuse, then to the battery.

Negative runs from the light straight to the battery.

Use a 12 volt 7ah SLA (flasher battery) to power it. Mount the battery and secure it to your shanty.

Now with the flip of a switch you will have light... lots of light.

Thinking about adding some light to my Eskimo Quickfish 4. Do you think a 19" strip would be enough light for this shelter? I am not planing on fishing after dark. Just thought it might be nice to have some extra light for charging lures and early mornings.
