Lost my 6" auger head this weekend.
The wing-hut that connected the handle to the auger snapped when I was pulling the auger up.
I could complain, but I realized that the repeated use over the years had taken its toll on that part.
Finished my second hole, pulled up and was left holding the handle while the auger head dropped to a 20" watery grave.
I will be replacing it as it wasn't too expensive and I like the smaller size for the lower weight and the faster cutting.
When it happened I could only laugh because there wasn't anything I could do at the time.
I hope I made someone laugh today.

Ouch! My condolences.
-
Good excuse to get a new piece of equipment!
-
Exactly!

Magnet for the win.
-
Lots of discounts out there with the lack of ice. Fish307 had almost everything 50% off the other day. Will show discount in the cart only.
-
ouch! i've had the wing bolt fly off before, but never snapped in half - that really shouldn't happen w/ good steel.
i keep a few wraps of electrical tape on the wing bolt to keep it from flying off...but probably wouldn't save the auger if the thing snapped in half....

that really hurts, I been down that road...Try a ply wood cicrle ,un der the nut hou, sing ...6 1/2"..Take care guys

Any idea of how far the auger would "wander" as if fell?
I figured it might of cork-screwed as it dropped, and could've acted like a propeller.
I tried to find it this past weekend with a fishing magnet, cutting over 30holes that covered an area roughly 10 feet in each direction.
No luck.
If conditions hold up I might try again.
If not, we'll try again in open water season...

You seem kind of a dopey guy so im not surprised that happened to you

At least I'm actually getting out and fishing.
-
I have a 35-40 year old Mora that actually has an attached hinge between the top and bottom section so you could fold it. The wing nut was to keep it straight.
Shame they started to make things cheaper
-
My auger wing nut, stripped out for a couple years now. I will use gorilla glue and tape to make sure my auger doesn't come off the claim plate.

Classy statement, not surprised though.
You seem like an arse .

Why in the hell would you call him a dopey guy. What has he done or said that would justify your statement?

Look who you're asking! No surprise really.

Im.not really an a$$hole but fishermantim always has something to complain about i i love giving it back to him.

fishermantim, you're not alone. Last weekend, I forgot to shut my tailgate and my sled and everything slid out of the bed. Luckily, I had my auger in the back seat. I was told that my stuff was all over the street. One guy chased me down and another person and his wife picked up everything for me! Told me that the flasher did not leave the sled, Thank God!

I think you may have me confused with someone else.
I may have a complaint from time to time, but they are few and far between, only when warranted. (unless I'm suffering from Old Man syndrome?) ;D
On a happier note, I was successful in finding my auger this weekend.
Using an underwater camera and patience I found it sitting next to the hole where it fell thru.
I also found the wing nut as well, and still had time for a little fishing.

That's GREAT news! how far north or west you going to find safe ice?

North east corner of Winnipesaukee.
There was roughly 6-7 inches, but the shores will be completely gone by this coming weekend.
I was glad that what was going to be my last trip this season ended on a good note.
