I put chains on front and rear.  Works fine.

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I measured my cross chains at 16 inches and the long chains at 35 inches.   I went down to the local wallyworld and bought a set of light truck chains of the correct width. I used a set of bolt cutters and made the length  correct. I got a real durable set of chains for about $60 that fit right.

I put them on and ran up the street and back to ruff up the smooth finish, that would have a better gripping on ice. Remember to stop and double check correct fit and tightness after a hundred yards or so.

I run the V-bars on the rear, but I have a Polaris and there is not enough clearance in between the inside of the front tires and the shock/springs.  Double check your clearance before you spend the money on chains for the front.
