1972 Ski Doo Olympique 399E Parts Help Needed
« on: Nov 21, 2012, 11:49 AM »
I just bought a 1972 Ski Doo Olympique 399E twin with slide suspension and it needs a new track. But for the life of me I:

1) can't find any info on what size/type of track it takes,

2) can't find any place that sells tracks for 1972 sleds.

In addition, the plastic hood is cracked. Anybody know where I can get a replacement, or know of someone that can do a decent repair on it?

Appreciate any help with these issues.

Barn.

Kimpex lists an aftermarket replacement track for that sled, most dealerships should be able to order one in for you.

As for repairing the cab, I've had good luck repairing them from the inside with some mesh drywall tape and a "Flexible Body Repair Kit" available from most autoparts stores. They're designed to fix the plastic bumbers on cars, the 3M one works especially well. It's basically just a 2 part epoxy you spread on from underside.
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....

Ah! Excellent! Thank you. I'm new to the snow machine game so I don't have all the best sources figured out yet. The Kimpex site is very helpful.

Do you have any pics? I picked one up myself. Thought it would be cool to restore and drive around. Here's a pic of mine. No track on mine either. Motor will turn when pulling the cord but I haven't tried starting it. Not until it's all torn apart and cleaned up with new fluids.

Wow! I thought mine was pretty clean, but yours looks like it's never been used! I'm getting there with mine. Just finished rebuilding the carburetor tonight. Hope to get it running tomorrow. Good luck with yours. I haven't created a Photobucket account yet so no pictures yet but I'll get around to it eventually. If you give me an email addresss I can send you some before then.

If you get stuck, let me know. We can probably learn from each other.

Thanks guys for the the leads.

to get the hood fixed check with a reputable body shop.  It's fiberglass and I'm sure they could fix it the right way for you.

Try the vintage snowmobile forums. There are tons of old parts available. I have the same machine with the bogie suspension. I have a fresh rebuilt engine, just need to rebuild the carburetor and try to dig it out from the back of my garage.

Parts Manual:

Doo Talk is a good source for information and parts.

Thanks for the parts list. That's one I hadn't found yet.

I got my 72 running last weekend. It idles great and screams when you mash the thumb throttle!

common snow!
