Here is a slightly modified version of a "Lake Erie Tip-Down"
The original design has been around for years, I added a sliding weight to keep it balanced.

These are great for perch and all other panfish. It it normally rigged with a spreader or a crappie rig with live minnows. The balance is so perfect you can detect the lightest bites.

How does it work???
It is balanced with a sliding egg sinker, even the slightest bite will cause it to rock.

These are a couple I use here on Lake St.Clair for perch mostly. The red one is from a buddies grandfather that used it in the 1930's. It shows the lightest tap from perch and the lightest are the biggest. The other one is made from a old broken rod tip and it works great as well. The gaff is made from an old rod handle with a big treble hook tied on  :) :)

how do you keep your tip downs from going down the hole? And what do you tend to bait tip-downs with? since it would seem that minnows would cause your tip down to rock.

I made a few of these with scrap oak flooring pieces. The pivot point is just 1/4" dowel. I only use them for perch so goin down the hole is not an issue
These were actually drawn off of someone elses tip down bought at CDn Tire. I lengthened it and cut out of better wood

I made a couple like that, out of wood, but put a piece of velcro across to hold the rod...paranoid about losing a rod...two went for a swim 3 years ago...lol

Here are some I built.

A bit of solder to adjust balance as needed.

Fold for storage.

Less than $7.00 in each one.

What keeps those from tipping over, or getting dragged down the hole?

My tip-downs are held in place with slush from the hole. Usually it just tips down and remain standing with fish on. The metal rod(7") running though the fishing rod prevents them from going down the hole if pulled off the stand, providing a 6" hole or smaller is used.

What part of Lake Erie do you fish on KingFisher1
Be safe out there, and set the iron.
