DON'T loose your ice fishing rod!
« on: Dec 26, 2005, 12:55 PM »

I am NOT what you would call an Ice Fisher. I have noticed from reading the posts of others that there is indeed a possibility that one may loose their rod and reel down the hole. I have come up with an idea to help out (I hope).  The idea is based on trying to put a square peg into a round hole. The unit, I call a RKD (Rod Keeper Device), is made with 1/2" CPVC Tubing. It is 12" square (I believe augers come in 8 and 10 inch diameter), the 90 Degree elbows are glued on. A length of cord is attached. The idea is to tie the loose end to your rod, lay the RKD beside the hole with the cord coiled beside it. If your rod goes down the hole the RKD will not go through and you can retrieve your rod.
P.S. This is NOT intended for anyone in particular, just trying to help out. Comments ?

Regards,
Snowball

Thanks for helping out lad and the idea is sound and definately has merit with the price of some of the rods and reels today .Running and diving for a $150 . outfit to stop it from going down the hole has its heart pumping moments and this would help to stop that .Thumbs up . ;D

Great first post Snowball.

It is always such a sad site to see a favorite rod standing vertical in the hole just prior to making its final plunge.

We did retrieve one last year with an aqua view camera and a jigging rapala.

You need to add a carabeener hook of the end of it so you can detach the unit when it's in your hand. Think I'll make up a cord with one on each end to aeeach to the shanty and rod when I step out.

Welcome aboard
There is nothing better than the smile on a childs face when they see the fish come up through the hole.
