lightest siding for ice shanty ?
« on: Dec 02, 2003, 07:29 PM »
Hey all,
Great to see all the activity on the site, getting me pumped for the season, still no ice in southern Maine though.

Here's my question:  what does everyone recomend for a light siding material for my shanty?  I had 1/2 inch cdc last season and had a super hard time getting it on/off ice (no ski mobile).  Any ideas?  -thanks in advance

Esox - what is "luan"?

Phisherdude - go to the ice shack tips section and check out the post called "very lightweight 6x8 shanty", or something like that.  Lots of good ideas there.

1/4" Is good if you take care of it. I have a 4x8 portable solid ends with canvas sides/top. Great set up and tear down. Very durable and easy to repair if needed. You can paint canvas any color you want. I painted my inside black, I have a spearing hole if I want to spear, nice and dark. Mostly use two angling holes.

AKA "Luan Plywood". A light weight non-exterior grade plywood type product. If you use it you need to paint it on the outside walls. That will seal it, so it will last a long time.

I was going to build one with corrugated plastic siding (type used for patios and carports) and spray insulate it, its extremely light and not too expensive if you buy the 2'x12' length (approx $14 at Lowes) which I will cut in to 2 pc's which will equal a 4'x6' covering. But my brother-inlaw removed some corrugated Aluminum from the ends of his barn and is going to give me enough to do the sides of my shanty 4'x10'x6' tall.

I have a 6x8 and used 2x2's for studs and blue board insulation, for the exterior I used 24" wide aluminum flashing, interior I used tyveck house wrap turned insideout, stapled on. (white). one narrow window in the door and a 16x30" window in ea wall.

floor is 2x4s layed flat 24"oc  w/1/2" ply on top.1-1/2" foam between (glued) I block ea corner w/2x4 layed flat and throw down a 2x4x6' in the mid area lengthways for suport in the mid area. holes in ea corner.

roof is 2x4s on edge w/1/2" ply w/"weather watch" (Ice dam/water protection) roll (sticky on back) stapled on over walls.( been there 7 years! no leaks!) 2" foam between 2x's

this house is light, I can push on one corner and am able to tip it. (if not froze down).
