Ice Creepers
« on: Nov 08, 2003, 06:25 AM »
I am going to replace my tired Ice Creepers ( the scissor type with straps on the toe and instep ) These have served me well. My question,  are the new ones on the market worth looking into? Your comments will be apprecieated.
  Thanks!

Where can I find a dealer online that carries the Corkers brand. I lost one since last winter and need to get a new set.

Tony - Where can the Arctic Spurs be purchased? I have corkers but am looking to 'lighten the load' since I wear Mickeys.

Walleye1:
Try Thorne Brothers for the Arctic Spurs.  Here is the link:
http://www.thornebros.com/winter/safety_items/arcticspurs_icecleats.html

Also, look here at a Fishing Minnesota web site:
http://fishingmn.com/icegrips.html

I just purchased their ice cleats from there.  They are a little bit more $40, but I have seen guys use them and they work and look great in my opinion.  Plus, they last forever.

Opps, look like the other link that I posted didn't come through.  Put fishingmn before the .com for to look at the other ice cleats.

I just bought 3 pairs of the Arctic Spurs from Gander MT at $9.99 each. They look good quality, thanks guys.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.

I stud my boots with 1/2"x #8 hex head sheet metal screws.

Nothing to put on and take off...nothing lumpy under foot...no straps, tubes or buckles...nothing to lose or forget at home....Tons of traction (one place gravity and girth pay off)

I did it in a pinch after breaking a creeper ...I'll never go back!

RG,
How many screws do you use? And how far apart do you place them?

Tony,
I have had a couple of occasions when nothing worked...3" of fresh wet snow on black ice. In general, 99% of the time, I've had no problems at all.  The snow and ice doesn't clog up on the bottom of my boots and I walk naturally....really saves my back on those 100 hole days.

Seaweed,
I have about 25 in each sole.

I've given serious thought to buying some threaded inserts  and using golf spikes but the screws are just too comfortable to walk with to change.

By the way, I'm 6'...220lb ( a bit more during the holidays)

IT'S SNOWING AND THE GROUND IS WHITE IN MY BACK YARD!!!

Tony, I think you're probably right about the "High Heel" effect...If I had the legs for high heels...I'd be a waitress!
I may have to checkout those spurs as a backup.

Hey Guys,
I don't think that we have glare ice that a lot of you guys must get(I think that we must have more snow on our ice--I guess).
I have a pair of the H-T rubber slip ons. They made a world of difference when I have used them.
I have only had to used them a few times...
I haven't tried them on my Mickey mouse boots, but I think that they will work out ok.
They were inexpensive to buy and are very light weight.
I don't know how they would hold up with an every day type of use .
Wyo Ice.
RIP "LT"   This place just won't be the same...
