Perch rod
« on: Feb 20, 2021, 08:09 PM »
So I just got into the ice fishing and have caught some perch but my rod just feels to heavy and can’t feel the bite so much. It’s a 28 inch medium rod. I was fishing 40ft with 4lb test

Looking for a light or ultra light rod I guess for perch.

What rod would you guys recommend without breaking the bank?  Bout a 60 dollar budget .

Thanks

Depends on what you are doing with it. If you're just using small jigs with a bit of waxie, etc, an UL is probably the way to go. I prefer L action for spoons or heavier jigs, and ML for raps/plugs, but a lot of it is preference.

I have a couple of Shakespeare Wild Ice rods in L and ML and love them. They're only $15-20 bucks, so they definitely won't break the bank.

The Ugly Stik GX2 ice in L action isn't too bad, but the tip is a bit mushy for me to get good hooksets fishing very deep water.

The Berkley Lightnings are pretty decent, too, but the grip is a bit fat. I prefer slender handles because I fish without gloves.

I picked up a couple berkeley amp ice rods last year that I really like, pretty sensitive with lots of back bone.

Two of my other rods are amps and I like them. They don’t come in an ul just a light. Maybe I’ll grab another one in a light.

Yes mostly jigging tungstung with a wax. So ul is best for that?

I've have a 27"  Fenwick Elite-tech in light, and a St Croix ultralight in 28" that I use for perch and gills. Love 'em both. Fishing 13 makes some nice ones too. I wouldn't go heavier than a medium light for perch, just JMO.

I have a 13 Vital UL. It has pretty good sensitivity and backbone, but the grip is really stubby so it's a bit awkward for me to jig with. I just use it for a bobber rig, and it works really well for that.

In your price range I'd at least check out a St Croix Mojo.  Not the most expensive rod I own but its becoming one of my favorites.

I use a St Croix Mojo 28" ML for perch and eyes. I may get a Light action for those extra finicky days. But the ML works fine!

I would choose light, try to find a fiberglass rod so you can see the bite.

Also at 40 feet of water it will kill each perch you catch do to that depth, just so you know...

I got a mitchell avocet combo for about 35 and i live it
.. Ligjt action but ive landed a few walleye on it so it can handle whatever nibbles VERY sensitive for a light action

The rod should be chosen for the technique behind it.  Typically working a spoon type of lure, a stronger backbone is preferable.  If working a common jig and plastic, a softer rod type will work.

27 UL ticklestick for perch - works great for detecting the "up" bites
