Lake Erie BS thread
« on: Feb 25, 2019, 07:02 AM »
It takes a special breed to brave the big girl... and that eventually rears its hilarious head and gets the thread locked down. Let's keep the chit chat over here. Hope this weather calms down to get out there.

That pic of the ice moving into the yards is quite amazing.

Agree its done

I was there last Saturday afternoon about 1:15 and it was somewhat tight but I could see things weren’t real safe .. it was best people didn’t show enmasse as it would have been bad ...

Once the ice boom let go that was it for holding the main ice back.  The ice boom is an Erie ice fishermen's friend.

i have lived around lake erie, for alittle over 63yrs..at one point you had an abundance of blue pike, you could drive a jalopy on the ice.then along came the ice boom .no more blue pike ,you take your life in your hands just walking on erie.you dont get quality ice anymore.just my thoughts.. one more point the new york power authority is one very wealthy .operation ....

The lake has held up well in my opinion, seeing how much ice was moved around.  Shoves are down to a minimum with a few cracks around.   Anything can happen with this cold week and temps below 15 the rest of the week.  I expected the lake to look worse, still locked good as of today.  Temps during the beginning of March will make or break now.

El Correcto Stallion!  Driving cars onto the ice each year from Hamburg was the norm for us.  Spoon-type hole augers were the first to replace spud bars for making holes and often weren't long enough to go all the way through.  Hard water fishing on Erie was a given - it was just a matter of when.  Availability of quality ice each year can not be counted on.

Probably back to the same 3inches it's been the last 3 weeks.

Back to chautauqua for rest of season

I was made to believe it was overfishing that caused the disappearance of blue pike?

The blue pikes demise was caused by a triple whammy of pollution, overfishing and the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959 which allowed the rainbow smelt (which ate blue pike eggs and fry) to infest Lake Erie. The blue pike could not tolerate all 3 ecological insults. The ice boom had nothing to do with it.

No one out of sunset or sturg from what I’ve seen.  Too many shoves to contend with.  Did see a guy out of sturgeons before the shoves yesterday afternoon, but haven’t seen anyone out where they should be there (over a mile out.) Hamburg had 2 snowmobile trailers parked there this mourning.  I believe those are the same guys from a few weeks ago, who like to fish pinehurst.  Don’t know who they are, perhaps they are on the board?

8-10 inches of ice out there this weekend.. definitely not for everybody out there this year. Couple spots that froze fresh with 1-2" of ice and snow covered which means machine swallowing spots. Like people said risk/reward ... but Brucie caught himself a hog and a few came undone on the way up aswell.

Tyrone, you can park at Hamburg beach on rte5 and walk straight out to get perch.  Or small boat harbor
