Being a downstater, Columbia Co. I was wondering, when is the average time that you northern boys get out on the ice and where?  Most of the waters around this area freeze in Jan it is rare that we can get on safe ice, 4" before Jan 1.  Thanks

From the Albany Times Union

By BOB GARDINIER, Staff writer
Last updated: 10:53 a.m., Monday, October 20, 2008

The first sight of snow is coming, but you wont need a shovel -- yet.

Morning rime on car windows may get a topcoat of snow overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, a light dusting that could send commuters rummaging for the ice scraper.

"There is a chance that we might see snowflakes falling overnight but there is little chance for accumulation," National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Villani said.

The reason is a fairly strong cold front pushing down across the Great Lakes that is colliding with moist air off the Atlantic, Villani said.

Some places in the Adirondacks and Green Mountains may see a dusting on the ground, but the sun this time of year will burn it off quickly, Villani said.

Another cold snap predicted for the middle of next week, but it is too early to tell whether it will bring snow or freezing rain, Villani said.

Last year, the first traces of snow were reported Nov. 16 and 17. The first accumulation last year, .10 of an inch, was reported Nov. 20.

Right now it's 28 with snow.
