As the Walleye Warrior Marathon celebrates its 5th anniversary, we would like to thank you for your support. It is because of the support of our fishing community we have been able to donate over $60,000.00 to cancer care and research. We are happy to announce that this year we have joined forces with the Never Alone Foundation, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the City of Selkirk. This partnership and the change of location will allow us to expand this very unique event and we hope we can count on your continued support. The Walleye warrrior 24 Hour Marathon in support of the Never Alone Foundation will take place in Selkirk, Manitoba on February 21st and February 22nd, 2009.

The event will host a variety of activities that will appeal to anglers of any experience level. There will be a daytime fishing derby starting at 9:00am where anglers, whether they be first timers or pros can try their hand at landing the big one! For the families wishing to take part there will be a Family Mini-Marathon and Kidzone from 1:00-4:00pm with special crafts and prizes and visits from various mascots. For those participants who are more adventurous, the 24 Hour Marathon will take place in our large heated tent where participants will continue to fish overnight. Breakfast and prize awards for the marathon will take place on Sunday morning complete the event. On Saturday evening all those attending are welcome to take part in a dinner and special memorial for Brian Leclair and other friends and family who have lost their battle with cancer.

All participants who sign up for our Early Bird registration can pre- register by sending a $50.00 pledge on or before January 23, 2009 to be entered to win the following great prizes:

Finding the Park is very easy.Go North on Main St. through downtown Selkirk until you come to the Chicken Delight on the East end of town.Turn right and go 1 street south until you see the park entrance which is right beside the Marine Museum.Corner of Eveline and Queen Street. In years past in Gimli we placed signs directing people to the event site.Should be some up again for this one.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Brian would be very, very proud.I certainly am: along with all the members of the LeClair family after receiving a killer e-mail earlier.Brian used this in his signature from day1 Make a difference. Support your local cancer care provider.
Well folks here's some awesome news just prior to the upcoming 5th event just around the corner Feb.21st and 22nd in Selkirk. All the money we have raised to date, which now exceeds the $60,000,00 mark has gone to Cancercare Manitoba in conjunction with the NeverAlone Foundation to assist those affected by the disease our event helps fight.A portion of the monies raised to date has been used in the purchase of equipment to aid those diagnosed and to help in treating them. The following is part of the e-mail sent to all the members of our organising committee which i would like to publicly share on the forum. Dear Walleye Warrior Committee,

CancerCare Manitoba Foundation would like to host a reception in your honour. Due to your dedication and fund-raising accomplishments, we were able to purchase an Ultrasound PICC Unit that is now housed at the CancerCare Manitoba site at the St. Boniface Hospital.

As you may know, a PICC line is a procedure using a thin, flexible catheter which is inserted into one of the large veins of the arm. The ultrasound unit gives the nurse the ability to select the best vein as to its size, or for finding veins that may lie several centimeters under the skin, that are not as visible to the eye. This results in much less irritation to the patient.

We would like to mount a plaque stating that the Walleye Warrior 24 Hour Ice Fishing Marathon funded the PICC unit. We welcome your suggestions as to what you would like to see written on the plaque.Dear Walleye Warrior Committee,

There are no size restrictions on any shack that participants are allowed to bring that i am aware of.We have had several large one at the earlier events.Anglers may bring their own shelters, augers, electronics etc. for the Marathon.I will try to find out about the policy on setting one up the day before.I believe that it is not permitted the day before but you may be allowed early onsite access to do this on Saturday if it is an elaborate and major construction process. Will attempt to confirm this matter soon so you can make your setup plans before next weekend...........Andy

Walleye Warrior derby raises $15,000 for Never Alone Foundation

Its location may have changed but the money raised was a whopper of an amount at the fifth-annual Walleye Warrior 24-hour Ice Fishing Marathon.

The popular ice-fishing event made its first trip to Selkirk Park last weekend after spending the previous four years at the Gimli Harbour.

The tournament, which attracted over 200 anglers, including 68 who fished for the entire 24-hour period, helped raise over $15,000 for CancerCare Manitoba and the Never Alone Foundation to help individuals and their families in the ongoing fight against cancer.

A $50 fee allowed anglers to participate in the full marathon and provided them with a ticket to a Saturday night dinner and a breakfast Sunday morning.

“($15,000) was a fabulous figure and it just shows where this tournament has come from, what it’s all about, and where it’s going,” said Winnipeg Blue Bombers president and CEO Lyle Bauer Wednesday afternoon. “It has evolved over the last number of years with higher attendance, certainly more profile, and we really have to thank the City of Selkirk and the Mayor (David Bell) for their support.”

Bauer set up the Never Alone Foundation and has had his own fight with the deadly disease - diagnosed with throat cancer in 2004.

And with the Blue Bombers as one of the main sponsors of the Walleye Warrior tourney, over $75,000 has now been raised through the event. That number, however, will assuredly grow substantially every year.

“It will continue to grow and there are some things we can even do better in the near future,” Bauer admitted. “It was an advantage to be in Selkirk with the close proximity to Winnipeg and we did receive very good support.”

The annual fishing marathon was an idea originated by Brian LeClair, who passed away from cancer a month prior to the inaugural event. Despite his passing, though, the first-year event continued in his memory and has become more successful each year.

People of all ages enjoyed themselves out on the ice while taking part in a plethora of activities.

There was a media challenge and Blue Bomber players Chris Cvetkovic and John Oosterhuis took part. Also making an appearance were Bomber mascots - Buzz and Boomer - cruising around the festivities on ATVs.

“It was a full day, but it was anything you wanted it to be,” Bauer noted. “It was something for all ages and it was such a great atmosphere...the excitement of a fish coming through the hole was unbelievable. People had a great time and everyone knows (the money raised) was going to a great cause for cancer and the Never Alone Foundation.

“Very few times do you have an event which tests your heart like that and this was one of them.” This was in the Selkirk Journal after the event
