I’m not new to hardside builds, I have 4 in various states of use/disrepair, but I’m a bit stumped on this one.
We are working to design a new shack to put out on a lake that has no public access, we have permission to cross a plot of land to access. The issue is that parcel has a narrow steep path to the water. We believe it will be wide enough for an ATV or SnowMobile, so in theory we can fit something 4ft wide down it but higher with trees becomes an issue.
This shack would be a sleeper for 2-3 people, they are fine on cots, but I really prefer the comfort of a bunk with mattress (the downfall of having experienced those comforts the last few years in my wheelhouse haha)
So we are hoping to build something 60-100sq ft, at least 6ft wide, with a pitched roof and insulation capable of staying out in weather down to -10. But it needs to all fold down, or come apart easily for access on and off, with mobility on the lake.
Any thoughts?

my thought is good luck. you arent asking much. lol lots of pins hinges and weight involved in a hard shack to get there. buy 2 of those quickfish6 insulated shacks. i think they are 60sqft or so. a portable car garage mite be something to think about too. you could make an inner insulated skin for it maybe?

Boy, if ya find something to fit that criteria, I'll be amazed. As mentioned, yer talking alot of weight compared to other shelters...and that's always a main issue. You might have to have a Sikorsky air crane chopper to lift it in...

Years ago we had a hard side that we took apart by unbolting it. It was 8 x 8 when all bolted up but would stack up to be 4 x 8 x 3 when being pulled down the trail.

The issue is this will be used by 4 or 5 of us without all of us always being there. The pop ups have 3 major issues for that:
They get stolen when left on the ice, the dont support snow loads when left, and they are a pain when taking down and putting up.
As a group we have a huge Eskimo insulated hub, a smaller fatfish, a clam insulated, a pull over, and a couple small pop ups, but we are really looking for something to leave out, and we spend multiple days at a time on the ice, rather not be setting shacks up at 6pm on a Friday in the dark every week

After looking around the internet and not finding a ton of info we set out on the build.
The basic design is:
2 4x8 floor sections 5/8 framed ~30 oc (a bit soft and will be addressed)
Attached to each of those is one wall on hinges. Front wall will be ~7’4” back is 6’ for a 2/12 single slope roof.
For the side walls we have made 4 panels that match the roofs slope. They will attach to eachother with bolts, and then to the folding walls with bolts. They will be screwed down to the floor on the ice.
For the roof we are going to make 2 4x8.? Panels and put tin on that. It will sit on top of what we have and be attached in a yet to be determined way.
Insulation is a mixed bag due to supply shortages, 1.5 and 1 inch foam. We will put weather stripping between each section of panel to avoid drafts.
The whole thing will be assembled on ice bottom up, and will sit on 2 skids laid side to side that will tie the floors together and ensure that we are working from a flat surface assembling.

Nice work, it should be light how much snow do you get on the ice?

Depends on the year. Last couple have been pretty bad, with thin ice and lots of snow. Hoping for a year with good ice, but this is being built with that in mind. The assemble on the ice factor makes getting it on and off without equipment possible (not fun) and we are hoping it comes in under 700lb once fully assembled.
Made the trip to Barnstead NH for fiberglass siding for it. Today. Hasn’t been cut or attached, but have it ready to go on.

Well the shack is coming together nicely.
We got it sided, painted, sealed the floor, and built the skids. Installed windows, built the door, and built beds that lift into a bench with a back like a couch!
Today in the snow we did a dry run of assembly. A couple hiccups, but it went together in under an hour start to finish.

Looks pretty nice. What will you use for a heater?

A buddy heater for now. May switch to a diesel in the future.
We disassembled it for transport on Sunday. Took us under an hour start to finish.

Well the shack made the voyage onto the lake today. Ice is not where it needs to be (4-5 inches) so we set up at shore where it is shallow enough that there is really no water under the ice.
Took longer than expected to assemble as we had a few issues with alignment we expected to have those though. We also forgot some stuff back at the truck, and it’s a decent Atv ride back to the trucks.
