These guys down here laugh when they see me out on the dock until I start pulling in Crappie (3or4 to their 1)....then they want to know how it works and how to get one  lol.
Have fun and be safe.

Marcum LX5
Vexilar FL8
Marcum swing arm thing is a pain in the as$ (seems I tangle more fish than not around the cord), I prefer the Vexilar float.

    LX-5 ----- Love it!
Easy fix for swing arm:  Get a swimming noodle w/ hole thru the center--- Cut to size & snug on cable w/ plastic ties.....Or do as I do: Drill extra hole.       Tight lines,   LL

"CATCH & RELEASE" --- For another day!

Vexilar FL12...not overly happy with it.  Seems like you have to turn the gain WAY up to see a jig once you get in 30+ FOW.  This is AFTER I sent it in to Vexilar to have it looked at.  The service note said "adjusted sensitivity all the way up"...don't think it's made much difference.  Anyone else with a FL12 notice this?

Yes, especially with ice flies. Using minnows that deep or deeper not a problem, just fishing for gills at that depth with smaller baits... gggrrrrr!

HumminBird 385ci  Really like it so far,  It is my first flasher.  As a bonus they have a promotion to also send you a free transducer for use in your boat on open water.

LX-5 here, I prefer the swing-arm over the vexilar float.  The marcum also appears to be much lighter than my FL-20 was.

had that problem but only with a couple of jigs in my tackle box.  Some jigs just don't show up well on any vex.  In 30 fow you would definitely have to turn your vex up I don't know about all the way.  Think about what the vex is doing.  It is seeing something under 30 fow smaller than a dime.

This is true and the shape of the lure and what it is made of will greatly affect the return on the sonar.  A tungston or lead horzontal jig will give a better return than a vertical jig the same size and material.  An ice fly made of floss or larval lace will absorb more of the sonar and return less back to the ducer, so the signal is weaker and you would likely have to turn up your gain to see it.  Basically, the harder and more horzontal the lure, the better the return.

I was a broke college student when I bought mine so I have the low end Vex FL-8 but not a single complaint from me.  The bottom 6 feet zoom is great but I seem to catch plenty without it.  When using ice flies I turn the gain way up to see my ice fly on the vex.  Once I can mark it I turn the gain back down and just rememeber what depth the fly is at.
