Title: Winnisquam Ice Conditions??
Post by: ThroughTheIce on Jan 14, 2020, 09:51 AM
Good morning all, been a while since I've posted, I'm sure nobody noticed.  Anyways, headed to Winnisquam this upcoming weekend with a group of buddies and was curious if anyone had a report on ice conditions there?  I know it's making ice now and will be nice and cold the end of the week, but did last weekend cause a bunch of melt (obviously)?  Id love to bring my snowmobiles too, maybe some snow between now and then will help too.

This is a yearly trip and the past few years, due to lack of ice, we've fished a more protected and calmer small setback on the southernmost point on the other side of the tracks.  Id rather not fish there again, as we've not had great luck, only a few small perch.  Does anybody have thoughts on a better (safe) spot at the southern point, down by Lochmere area?  I do NOT want your honey hole, just somewhere I may catch some fish and have safe ice.

I have used Dispy's suggestions in the past and had a great time bringing my kids to BIP for a lot of flags and fun on the ice.

Thanks for any help you have and as always, when in Pittsburg, eat at Grampy's and say hi to John.

Leave your machine at home, last time there, some edges where not approachable.  Ice cover decent on north end but lots of sporadic holes

I'd plan on fishing elsewhere.. it just finally locked up with a glaze before the weekend (I live on the lake on the north side of the bridge) but the weekend killed it and blew it wide open. Completely open water as I'm looking out and writing this. Even with the cold coming, so will wind so I can't see it even close to safe for at least 2 week if lucky..

Thank you..  Looks like we'll be in the setback again.

Thank you, better to be smart and stay on top of the ice.

My buddy fished the north end last weekend during the warm spell, he fished at the by loon cove, about 8” of ice all the way across, I wouldn’t recommend any snowmobiles or 4 wheelers. Good luck

Have been ice fishing Winnisquam since I was 10 years old...almost half a century.  But a few minutes ago everything changed.  For the first time ever, I bought a RESIDENT fishing license.  No bob house this year (those who saw my Celtics green shanty will know where I've fished).  But I'm going without for this season with plans to build something new over the summer.  With the cold spell coming in hard, I'm thinking we're ice fishing through March now.  So excited to get out there in the hope that the fish will now treat me like a local.  Tight lines all!

Thanks very much Lv2!  Still planning to fish the same spots.  But now I can get out more often...and I can register my old snow machines as antiques!
Tight lines and FLAG!!!
