Straightening Wire Leaders?
« on: Jan 22, 2007, 02:05 PM »
Anyone have any advice / tips / tricks for straightening wire leaders?  After catching a few pike, the leaders look more like springs and it seems to hurt the action of the hook.  Are the leaders garbage?

Thanks

Dont know what you are using for leaders. If you are using those South Bend invisi-leaders, get another leader. Those are junk and kink up easy. You might want to give florocarbon a try.

Steel leaders will do that after a few pike usually.  I have never heard of a great way to straighten them.  A good investment are titanium leaders such as teminators.  They are very pricey about $15 each, but are worth it considering they will last a thousand times longer than a steal leader.  They are actually cheaper in the long run if you look at it that way.  I am a pike guide at a fly in lodge in MB, and still have one terminator I have used for two summers now, I have likely landed a thousand pike or more on it and the only thing that finally wore out at the end of this summer is the rubber protector on one of the loops, other than that its still perfectly fine.

Its almost impossible to straighten them, id buy new ones or better yet try fluorocarbon or heavy braid for leaders...a lot less messin around and they dont hinder live bait the way wire leaders do
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

I agree with replacing them also, but if you are interested Du-bro does make a wire leader straightener. I have one and use it in the open water sometimes especially on my single-strand leaders for pike and muskie. Works pretty good. Here is a link if your interested;http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AXQXN/yahoo-sg-20/ref=nosim

Thanks for the links and info.  For the time it takes to switch it, I'm gonna pitch 'em and replace 'em.  Next time I'm at the tackle shop I'll see about switching to flurocarbon or braid.

what i do is use a big rubber band on my tip up when storing my tip ups i put it on one end of my beaver dam and hook the treble on it and wrap up my tip up that way the leader stay straight and has a little tension on it. as far as kinked leaders you need to replace those

I say make your own that way throwing out a leader is a lot cheaper especially if you do a lot of pike fishing.  Dealing with a bent leader is to much of a hastle for me (Less TIme with the lure in the water :))

make your own
reuse the hook [sharpen if needed] and swivel
the wire and sleeves are inexpensive
this way you can make them any lenght you want
started using the titanium myself-love it
haven't had to change a leader yet
its expensive[$20 for 30']but the seasons short
