DIY LED Shanty Lights (with pictures)
« on: Jan 04, 2011, 02:28 PM »
Just got done rigging up my new shanty lights, man it is nice. Here is how I did it...

I bought the LED strip from craigthor (he might have some left). This is the link to where you can get them. http://besthongkong.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_71&products_id=178

I hot glued it to the right pole of my flip over, facing towards the holes. Then I took those wire ties and secured it so it cant come off if I knock it with something. http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/shebadog_01/100_1323.jpg

Then I wired up the pos and neg wires out of the LED strip to some nice thick wires and secured them to the same pole with electrical tape. I then wired up some flat ends to be able to hook up to a flasher battery. 12v 7ah SLA. http://cgi.ebay.com/12V-7AH-12-Volt-7-Amp-Hour-SLA-Sealed-Lead-Acid-Battery-/370216307200?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item56329c8a00

Lights out http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/shebadog_01/100_1324.jpg
Lights on  http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l213/shebadog_01/100_1325.jpg It is a lot brighter than it looks in the picture.

Everything works great and it is more than enough light to see the holes when fishing at low light. Produces a lot more light than I was getting with the windows open on a sunny day as well.

I will be adding a rocker switch, so I can turn it off when moving spots without unhooking the battery, as soon as I can pick one up. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360262941023&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Also, I may add another to the left pole for fishing at night (will be super super bright).. one is still plenty for fishing at night. Now I can run a heater instead of a lantern.

Since I had the battery on hand, and all the hardware...
Total money invested: $8.00

I would say two would be plenty for a two man flip over.

That would probably be handy in recharging any glow jigs you would be using too!

I wouldn't mind seeing this in person some time.  You going to be at Macbride on the 8th?

My shack is at home, and I am at work.  I will post the pictures soon.  I took an eight foot piece of 2x2 and cut two sections off at about 10 inches long.  I sanded them down and painted them black.  I bought 4 led "tap lights" from walmart that are about 5 inches in diameter, they come with tilt and swivel, so you can spin and angle them.  They were six bucks each.  I pulled the backs off of them and and screwed two of them evenly spaced onto  each 10 inch long section of 2x2.  I screwed the male end of the velcro to one side and the female end to the other side.  When I set up my flip over, I just wrap the velcro on the fixtures around the top support bar and can adjust the lights to shine where I need the light.  In between these two light fixtures I run a clam light/fan combo that hangs from the velcro wrap on the cover and it sends a considerable amount of heat down from the roof of the shack when the fan is on.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much air this tiny little fan can move.  It also has a light ring on it, and aids with the light situation as well.

I bought waterproof 3' led strips at advanced auto. I hooked 1 on each of my overhead poles ( I have 3) then wired them in series and ended it with gator clips. I also have a marine 12 volt deep cycle battery mounted in the sled

Both sound like fantastic systems. I built this one instead of a bigger over head light simply because it takes up no room what so ever. It is only a half inch wide so you dont even notice it, and it only ads 2oz of weight to my shanty. Plenty of light, in a little package, cant beat that.

Do you think a 12 SLA battery would run 3 sets of those lights?

I have a Frabill hideout, fishes 2 comfortably, 3 tight. I thought about using one set on the top bar pointing down and 2 sets on the front bar (shoulder high when sitting) pointing to the holes.
