Installing Hyfax kit on Frabill Commando
« on: Jan 26, 2010, 12:52 PM »
I am going to be installing the hyfax runner kit on my frabill commando tonight. I have looked at the directions and the install seems pretty straight forward. For those out there that have installed this kit, is there any tips or tricks that I should be aware of. Thanks.

Get the hyfax warm - use a hairdryer on the bend, if necessary, so you don't have to force it much.

I have already assembled the rest of it. I can see where I am going to have a more difficult time putting the runners on with the tent attached to the sled. The heat idea seems like a good tip. Thanks Guys.

I just installed the kit on my Trekker II and did it before I attached the tent skirt to the sled which made things a lot easier. I also used a heat gun on the bends.

Yeah, definately heat up the runners at the bend before installing.
I proped the ends of the runners up above my wood stove for about 10 mins. and hand bent them to the shape of the sled before installing.
Made for an easy installation.

not familar with the Frabill BUT, if you drill the holes smaller than the bolts....screw them into the tub...they will hold themselves in place. I did my Otter Mag. Lodge in under 30 minutes doing it this way.

1- if you have 2 drills rig one with drill bit a little smaller than the bolt, the other with correct screw bit
2- drill first hole for hyfax, bolt and nut this one
3- drill next hole, screw bolt in...drill second hole, screw bolt in. put all the bolts in then step around tub and put nuts on.
Repeat #2 and #3 for the rest of the runners
Good luck!!!

The hyfax install went good. Took about an hour and a half with a few refreshment breaks. Thanks all for the advice.

bought my first commando, but i always pull it by hand. do i really need the runner kit? Does the bottom wear out that fast, and do they make a huge difference in the snow?

Here's what I did with mine.

Didn't like the idea of drilling holes in the bottom of my sled. Didn't like the price of the plastic stuff either. There's about $5 in my runners.

I added $10 Downhill Skis from Thirft Shop to the bottom.  I pull by hand few times in early ice, then ATV rest of year so I did NOT do a Regular Smitty Sled, my Skis have no "LIFTS or RISERS", this is so I can pull easier, protect the bottom of my investment and keep the seat height almost the same, while being rapidly mobile.  :)

Hyfax will wear down especially pulling great distances... I figure the cheap Skis will last 10x of Hyfax and 1/10th the cost :)

RG - what are the vertical tubes in the corners for?  U-bolt and any flange at the top or other fastener?
Curious.

Sorry guys I had to dig for the pics,

Bent them close.

Flattened them with a hammer on the garage floor.

Attached with 5/16 stainless carriage bolts at the ends only

As for the tubes...
Removable runners. They work great

Cheap, effective and easy to do ;D

RGFIXIT,

Wow great ideas and pictures too.  I am considering adding two of these to my outer edges for even more protection to the sled.  As mentioned above I have my Downhill skis already mounted.  Bless
